Hi ladies, i had my baby 6 days ago. Since yesterday, my milk seems to be flowing too quick, when baby is feeding, she is literally having to gulp and gasps for breath. She is now suffering from really bad colic which i'm assuming is down to the fast milk flow, and gulping down her feeds. It's really upsetting seeing her in the amount of pain she's been in, and she doesn't seem to be parting with any of her wind. Any suggestions what i can do so that my milk isn't flowing so fast?

Thanks :flower:

try expressing off a bit of foremilk before each feed, that way she will get more hind milk which should help the colic symptoms and mean you flow is slower when she does feed

Agree with the above poster...try pumping some out before you feed.

If you're expressing off the top, make sure you hand express and stop when you can see that it's slowing. I used to kind of squeeze and then press gently along the breast. You'll see what I mean about it slowing when you do it.

Personally, I wouldn't do this unless it's literally spraying everywhere. Instead, try block feeding for a few days. This means feeding from one side only for a few times, then switching to the other. I found this to be the best way of calming the letdown and supply.

i total agree with that i have the same issue and my poor child gets strangled alot but i feed from the left breast more and i usually hand supress before! Good luck hun

I had this when amelie was tiny and I used to let her suck a bit then take the nipple out and put a breastpad over it so she wasnt choking on the fast flowing milk. Also I kept her quite upright whilst feeding.

IMO its better to tune baby to the flow than the other way round as if you mess about with your supply it might suffer and its harder to fix IYKWIM.

When I had a really quick flow I was told to lie back a bit when you feed, to start with this was hard, but if you get her latched then lie back in a chair it means you get some more rest too :)

We had to do block feeding as suggested above and after two days of that my supply had balanced out and my low wasnt quite as quick.

Hang in there it will get easier

argh the milk spraying days !! i miss them in a way, keep breast pads near when she has a break put breast pad on and let it spray into pad it will calm down i no longer wear breast pads

I used to press against my boob with a muslin cloth, let it spray in that for a little while and then put her on. I was literally like a fire hydrant and Sofia had no chance!
