Now for as long as ever whenever Gabriel wakes up form a nap he is always crying and sad :( I dont know why exactly but I do notice when he has napped for longer he is happier, what I want to ask you is what determines your lo's naps? is it you or lo? Im think of becoming stricter and trying to get him to nap 2 hours a day cos now he naps once a day and when its a 40min one the rest of the day is aweful, :coffee:
what would you do? I am thinking of if he wakes b4 the 2 hours go in and comfort/bf and put him down and not going back til the time is up...

wow ive been out half the day and this thread has had 13 views and no replies..i am thinking perhaps this is a common problem?

How long has he been napping just once a day? When we first switched Hannah to one nap a day she'd only sleep about 40-50 minutes. It corrected itself in about a week though and she started to sleep for 1.5-2 hours. Generally now she naps about that length of time though if she's not feeling well she'll have a shorter nap (and an earlier bedtime as a result!). I usually put her down after lunch, so anywhere between 1 and 2 and let her sleep until she wakes up unless she tries to sleep past 4, than I get her up (her bedtime is 8/8:30)

Aisling is on one nap a day now after lunch and she then naps for about 2 hours. I have found that alot of the time she'll wake after 45 minutes or so and moan for a few minutes. If for some reason she doesn't go back off to sleep or if I mistakenly get her up, she's grumpy for the rest of the day but if I let her go back off then she's in a good mood :) I'd try seeing if he'll go for a bit longer as he might just need a bit more time/help is settling again.

Hayden's naptime is set, at noon everyday, I don't wait until he starts acting tired or anything. He sleeps anywhere from 2-3hrs sometimes though he won't sleep that long, so the length he stays asleep is based on him

If Daphne wakes up crying then I always re-settle her and try to get her back to sleep. If grizzles then she's normally ready to get up. She was a nightmare going from 2 to 1 naps, she would sleep in the morning from 9/10am for an hour and half but then not have the energy for the rest of the day and refuse a second nap. I used to put her in the cot for an hour and her fave toys and then fall asleep next to her, so she had least had some quiet time. Also more her bedtime earlier even if that meant putting her to bed at 6pm.

Wow thanks for your replies, all very helpful!
Vickie he has been on one nap now for over a month, I think Ill try to encourage him to stay longer like Lu has said, today was alright he was a wee bit grumpy but when i did go in at 2 he was lying down with teddy so it couldnt of been all that bad?

I let Katie sleep an hour and a half after lunch and then I wake her up. She would sleep over 2 hours if I let her but then it was taking her longer to go to sleep at night

Charlie wakes at 7am, goes for a nap at around 9ish where he sleeps for about 45mins. He then has his 2nd nap at around 2 and that can last for anything up to 2 hours+. He sometimes wakes himself up after being down for around 1/2 hour, but he puts himself back to sleep again. He then goes to sleep for the night at around 7-7.30. Sometimes he can wake a bit of a grotbags if he hasn't had much sleep in the afternoon, but I am just really really nice and happy to him and then he can't help but cheer up!!

Amelie wakes up at around 7am and has a nap at nursery after lunch for about 45mins and she wakes naturally unless shes still sleeping when i arrive at the nursery to take her home :(. She sometimes tries to go for another at 4.30pm but i discourage it cos she stays up realllllllllly late if she does!

oh wow looks like amelie doesnt get enough naps or something compared with the other kids?

William has never had as much sleep as my friends kids seem too! He often has 2 naps with less than an hour sleep in total during the day. He often has to have an earlier bedtime as a result though.

Yesterday he had about 45 mins in the morning after getting up at 8 (latest ever!) then 5 mins in his pushchair on way home from the park in the afternoon, was woken by a super noisy motor bike! Then asleep at 6.45 for bedtime so less than an hour for him. He's just down for a nap now, no idea how long he'll sleep for most days!

I just go with the flow

Chloe and Jaycee have one nap a day and it is usually from when we leave nursery at 12.30pm til 2pm/2.15pm the latest. If they sleep longer or have another nap they wake in the night and I'd rather sleep to be honest lol!

They should sleep around 12 hrs a night and aslong as they are getting that naptimes in the day dont matter.. Chloe and Jaycee usually sleep for about 11 hrs and they have their nap in the daytime so as far as im concerned they get what they need..
My friends daughter still has two naps a day and sleeps all night!

Ruby goes down whenever she is tired, not set because she wakes up at different times in the morning, anything from 6.30 to 8am. However I don't let her sleep past 2.30pm unless she is massively tired because it will result in a terible struggle at bedtime even if she appears tired then. I limit any nap after 2pm to 30 minutes.

Usually she has a late morning nap for about an hour or an hour and a half. If she has woken up later in the morning she will usually only sleep for 45 minutes and she will be ok.

She is usually in bed by 7pm.

If she wakes up crying from a nap then I will try and re settle her but it rarely happens, she seems to wake up happy from naps these days no matter what the length.

Until I was about 4 I used to sleep from 7-10am then go to nursery and after nursery I'd go for a 2 hour nap
