I may be being really stupid.
LO had VERY bad nappy rash a few days ago. It came on very quickly and by the second nappy of noticing the redness he developed an area about the size of a 5p where a layer of skin had gone like a blister and was bleeding a little.

I've been giving him lots of nappy-free time (which cleared up the redness), sudocrem (didn't help) vaseline (to stop the nappy rubbing..just made his nappy leak) and talc (my mum's advice because the blistery bit was wet..like blisters are)

I've just changed his nappy and the blister had a dry white layer over it (looked like a man's parts who hadn't washed his winky for a week or 2) I can't remember if I put talc on him last time I changed him..but it didn't look like talc. Usually when I talc the blister the layer of talc is gone next time I change him.

Could it be infected? Or something that isn't nappy rash? I can't take pics because my camera is broken. Or could I be being stupid and it's just the talc gone funny?
Any help?

Sophie had nappy rash and our neighbour who's a nurse said to stop using talc....we always thought talc would help.

She told us to put a thin layer of egg white on the nappy rash but only when it reaches the blister stage...sounds crazy but apparently works a treat!

Hope your LO is ok - sorry I don't know what the white bit could be...maybe the talc has dried funny? xxxxx

Ok, I'll stop using talc. I thought it was a pretty good idea when my mum suggested it, obv not.
Have you tried using egg white?? (or anyone else tried it on here tried it?)
I have lots of eggs so it'll be worth giving it ago. How long can I keep the egg for once I've cracked it? Or do I need to use a different egg each change?

It's strange about the talc isn't it? I thought it would be soothing and help any wetness that might be making things worse.

Sophie's cleared up with tonnes of sudocrem and frequent nappy changes before we got to the blister stage so we haven't tried it but our neighbour used it on her 3 babies and her daughters have both used it on their babies too. I can ask her how long you can keep the egg white - I'll get back to you xxx

ok...I've spoken to her and she said you just whisk up the white and use just a little bit - a thin layer. You can keep the rest in the fridge for up to 24 hours. She said it should clear up the blister - it should kind of form a hard layer over it she said. xx

Thank you very much. I used a little early, but not on his last nappy change because he was screaming in pain. I had to get my OH to help me hold him down. I was almost crying. He was proper screaming "Mummaaa" as if he was begging me to stop.

It's not thrush is it? I would pop to the chemist with him and get them to take a look. It sounds like the white layer is from the talc but just in case ... pharmacists are usually pretty good with this sort of thing!

My LO had somethign similar a few days ago; her bum looked like it had been attacked by a cheese grater

Turns out it was a fungal infection, and applying Canesten cream (thrush cream) three times a day finally sorted her out. I had been using everything I could think of prior to that, and it just got worse. Once we started using the Canesten, it took a good 6 days to go, but within the first couple of applications you could see it was working, and LO wasn't crying anymore. I just applied the cream at nappy changes, three times a day, and other nappy changes we just used Sudocrem.

I did think of thrush. Is it worth taking him to the doctors for a proper diagnosis or just straight to the chemist.

If I go to the chemist will I have to pay for the medicine?? Usually I wouldn't care but we are seriously broke at the minute.

Definately get him seen by a Dr. We've had problems with fungal nappy rashes before and the only thing that worked for us was a prescription only medication. It's a horrible time when they've got nappy rash and I think that the reassurance of visiting the Dr is priceless.

As it's Saturday can I suggest you call NHS24, then at least you'll get seen before the weekend is over.
Take care and :hugs: xx

It sounds like thrush. I think canestan is about £4.

Sudocreme is ok as a nappy cream when skin is a bit reddy/pink but its useless for anything worse. Try Metanium or Drapolene (both available in Boots and some supermarkets) as they are so much better at getting rid of bad rashes

BTW, I went to the GP and showed them LO's bum, and they prescribed clotrimazole cream, which I assumed was prescription only, but then I found out it was just the same as Canesten.

I have used Canesten in LO's neck creases before (she would dribble there lots and at some points it was red raw and had some pus), and it's totally safe, as long as you apply it thinly and no more than 3 times a day (4 at most). In my opinion, you may as well get started on the Canesten if you can't see the doctor straight away, just in case it is what your LO needs.

sounds like thrush to me too hun, its v painfull when its red raw, get some cream asap

ive not used it myself but i have heard that boot the chemist so a thing called minor aliments where they can give meds free to people with children, like calpol etc, maybe canasten is covered
