So I've not had my LO yet but I needed some information and thought that this would be the best place to come :D

I've not decided quite yet if I am FF or BF and I'm still looking into both.

But to those who FF how do you prepare the formula?
Because I've heard people who say you should always warm the milk up and others who say they just fill a few bottles with boiling water and then leave them sitting and add the milk when needed so the formula is at room temp. It's just puzzled me.

What do you do or recommened?

It's all about finding the balance between safety and practicality. There are three methods most commonly used

1. make the bottle with water boiled less than 30 mins ago, cool and use straight away
2. make bottle up as above, cool quickly, store in fridge and warm when needed
3. put boiled water in bottles and add powder just before giving to baby

In any case, you can offer the formula at room temperature or warmed. Fridge cold tends not to go down too well.

According to the official guidelines, they rank 1-3 in order of safety. However, they rank 3-1 in order of practicality.

All you have to decide is which you're happiest with.

If the cost isn't an issue, you can also buy ready made cartons which are easier still - but they work out very expensive to use all the time compared to powder.

Fin drinks 6oz bottles - i fill them up to 4 oz and let that cool, then as and when he needs a bottle i add 2oz of boiling water and the powder - then its about the perfect temp!

Hiya, I breastfeed and would really reccomend it if you can do it ! Its free, convenient and its really good for you and lo ! I also sometimes top lo up with a bit of formula if shes extra hungry and I make it as and when she needs it (which is hardly ever !) Good luck !

Thanks for the info ladies :D

But another wee question
See expressed milk, how is that given to a baby? Just at room temp? or does that get heated up before serving?
Just if I do BF because I will need to express due to my schedule

Well you need to store it in either the fridge or freezer depending on how long you're keeping it for. So it would need warming at least to room temperature. I imagine it would be best to offer it at around body temperature to be consistent with BF.

I BF for the first mth or so then FF. I Make the milk up and then put in cold water until cool and gave it to her cool. This means when out she will drink the cartons that are cold too.

If you express then you can store it in the fridge for a couple of days, or freezer for months (defrost it in the fridge), to warm you boil some water, put it into a jug or container then put the bottle of milk in until it warms the milk (only takes a coulple of minutes) then test the milk on your wrist, you shouldn't be able to feel it on your wrist, which means it's the correct temp (body temp) but if it feels warm then it's too hot or if it feels cold then it needs a little longer to heat!

I also recommend breastfeeding, a lot less fuss!

i ff but i say give bf a try. it didnt work out for me after 2 weeks of trying but im glad i gave it a good go. i boil the kettle and fill the bottles up and then put them in the fridge and warm it up and add powder when im ready. im glad now i do ff because at the time it was more trouble tryin to get her to latch. xxx

I make Rosalies bottles up in advance and store them in the fridge, with expressed breast milk you store that in the fridge so would need to let it heat up to room temp at least xx

I'd certainly recommending trying BF even if it's just for a week or so. The colostrum is amazing stuff with lots of antibodies and it helps clear out the meconium. It really is the best thing to feed your baby.

I'd say try bf first too, it is hard but worth even the smallest drop if you can manage it.

We do No 2 in blahblahblah's list.

Boil kettle, let cool for 30mins, fill sterilised bottles with the req amount (2-3oz for a little one) and add the powder. Let cool and then put in back of fridge.

I also agree if your happy to, then at least give BFing a go for the colustrum if nothing else.
I find the best way for me to express (and get tons out) id to express off one boob and feed him on the other at the same time to take full advantage of the let down. i usually fill up a bottle this way. Then put it in the fridge where it can last 3-5 days (iv heard different times) or in the freezer where it can last months.
The when you are ready to use it, if its from the fridge put the bottle in a bowl of hot water for a couple mins and its usually perfect, or let frozen bottles defrost in the fridge and then do the same.
The milk should be body temp so like someone else said, you should not be able to feel it on your skin
Good luck with w/e u decide xxxx
