A friend of mine had her 20 week scan today, found out the sex of it, but was also told its probably going to be premature as its so small for its age, its 1lb 3oz i think. Then they said she isn't going to be given any more scans at all, is this correct? Obviously she's a bit worried about what they told her, seems a bit odd to me that she wouldn't be allowed anymore scans at all.

Thanks for any help

Yeah in most places in the UK we only get the two scans, the 12 week one and the 20 week one. I wish we had more too! Wish your friend all my luck for me, I hope her baby is ok

Less than 1lb is normal for 20 weeks, so 1lb+ sounds big to me. I think they base the estimated weight on abdominal and head measurements. But it is pretty standard to not have any scans after 20 weeks if everything is otherwise fine. I'd think if they were worried about it they would be doing growth scans.

Haven't a clue about the premature thing sorry, I had a scan at 23 weeks and was told the baby weighed about 1lb 6oz so 1lb 3oz at 20 weeks doesn't sound small to me!

It's normal to not have any more scans after 20 weeks unless there is a problem (I had one to look at placental blood flow at 23 weeks and am having one at about 30 weeks because of a low placenta). Most people don't have one after 20 weeks though.

But surely if they told her there may be complications, they would check up on the baby regularly to be safe.
Is 1lb 3oz small for a 20 week baby?

i would have thought if there telling her the baby is going to be premature they would be scanning her alot more frequently, that they would just leave things seem to be odd xx

Ok thanks, it is possible she's lying for attention, she is that sort of person i suppose, just wanted to be sure though, thanks everyone x :hugs:

I don't think it's right.
Surely she needs a growth scan at 28weeks? And maybe an appointment to see a consultant.
Tbh if that was me, I wouldn't accept no scans if baby wasn't growing?!

my first thoughts was that shes making it up! but i dont no her so dont have a clue lol, some people lie about the most twisted things xx

Yes if there were complications they would check more regularly so I would say they don't think there is. Did they say exactly why they thought her baby would be premature? Does she have the printout of her report - the information should be on that. 1lb 3oz seems if anything too big for 20 weeks. Perhaps they think her dates are wrong - did she have a dating scan at 12 weeks?

yeah i thought so too, i did ask her questions about it and it appeared she knew nothing, she didnt ask them anything about it, risks etc she just went home, i'd be causing mayhem if i was told that.

And yeah she's defo 20 weeks, give or take a day she had a scan at 12 weeks which puts her at the same stage as now.
Don't understand her reasoning for lying tbh, really silly

That's pretty sad she would do that. And how in the world would they know she'd be premature at only 20 weeks? Unless there was a specific problem that would cause her not to be able to go to term. Doesn't add up.

i dont know anything about babys weight but if the baby was small they usualy tell u to come in like every 2 weeks for growth scans thats wat my friend had to do cuz her baby was small..mine on the other hand has been bigger at the 1st scan by 10 days then again 2 week so at my nxt scan there gona tell me if i need growth scans as babys growing awful quick ....i was given my bookin in scan at 12 weeks, 1 booked for 21 weeks then a 3rd 1 at 29 weeks...had to get an extra scan at 17 weeks due to a fall...think different areas/hospitals are different tho xx
