My LO has been bottle and formula feeding since 3 weeks (now 14 weeks) and has been on Aptamil since we started.

He's always been fine with drinking, usually drinks 2oz straight away with a break of about 5-10 mins where he would drink the rest (normally between 4-5oz every 3 hours through the day). He's been on size 2 teats since about 8 weeks.

However the past few days he's been having problems. I upped his feeds to 6oz a week or so ago as he was draining 5oz more often than not. That's not really the issue (just thought I'd add in how much he's on). What it is is that half the time he seems to have forgotten how to drink from the bottle - he'll be crying with hunger but then flick the teat out of his mouth (usually to the side) for a while before drinking his usual 2oz. Then when he stops he will scream blue murder and when I try and give him more he looks like wants it but still bending the teat and flicking it out. A lot of the time he will then suddenly drink the rest fine but others I just can't get him to drink more.

This isn't every feed and some he's downed the whole bottle easily but more often than not we're having problems. He's also started falling asleep straight after each bottle which he never did before.

Has anyone experienced similar or got any ideas what it could be?

My LO is doing this. I think they are just learning to use their tongue but I could be wrong! I just wait and then try and get the teat in the middle of his mouth and if he pushes it to the side or out then I just keep going til he drinks. He tends to still want it so he isnt pushing it out because hes had enough.

My LO started to mess with the teats at feeds around that age too. Was using size 2 and she was taking an age to feed. I tried size 3 avent teats and this resulted in her frantically drinking the first couple of ounces but unable to maintain the sucking for this size teat. I have now changed teats to Mam size 2 which she is coping well, no more playing with the teat with her tongue, takes about 20 minutes to have 6-8oz bottles. The teats fit my avent bottles and I have bought a few pink Mam bottles too!

Hope you find something that works for your LO x

Could it be that he needs to burp? I find that my lo will stop drinking if he needs to do a big burp.

Thanks for the replies, I did initially wonder if he was outgrowing the size 2 teats but he's acting quite different to when size 1 became too slow and frustrating. He always burps well so I don't think it could be that.

After posting, I did a bit of researching and I'm now thinking it might be early teething signs which does seem to make sense as he screams when he can't get the teat properly as if his mouth is sore and has started sucking/biting his hands and pulling at his face. I just didn't expect it to start this early!!

I am experiencing the same problems, so will be keeping an eye on this thread!
