Hi all,

Just wondering if you all subscribe to the new baby new mattress idea or if you have any specific information about the safety reasons etc. On one hand I feel like my swing crib and cot mattress hardly had any use and its a waste to throw them but on the other hand I know Id never forgive myself if I didnt get them and God forbid something happened.

I would have automatically replaced them but then I think every parent I have asked lately has said they havent bothered so I wondered what you will do/plan to do if you are in this position?

Thanks

I will be buying new.... My main reason is because we lost a nephew to SIDS and I would never forgive myself if something was to happen.

It's very vague which I don't like. We have a plastic covered foam mattered for DS and I may re use it after some research. But baby will be about 1 by the time it uses his old cotbed..
I wouldn't however re use a mattress from another household especially if they smoked or had pets x

I bought new in line with FSIDS recommendations. I guess it would also depend how you stored it? Will it be dusty? Opportunity to have gotten damp? Was it stored in a loft which may have had mice/birds in you've not noticed which could lead to disease etc

I will be keeping ours because it was not used regularly since it was at my mom's house for just sleep overs, etc. It was stored in a sealed mattress bad and is in almost new condition.

I would re use it if you got it new for your 1st child or knew where it came from . I it's been stored in a clean place there isn't anything wrong with it .

Just check it for holes rips and soft spots , if its sill firm and intact go ahead and use it.

I would be open to re using it if I had bought it new (especially if it was going straight from one baby to the next). But I feel like it gets a little grey after that, if I had bought it new but then stored it for a few years in between babies I'd be less inclined to use it again (just due to chances of it being dusty, or mildew, or a gross smell from storage), I find once something is stored it's never the same... And if I was buying used I most defiantly would be buying a new mattress.
It all comes down to personal choice though!

I've been thinking about this. My son is 11 months old and is currently in his cot but it's quite a small one so we're going to get a new one for him and put new baby in his old one. I was going to change the mattress but I think I'll probably just re-use it. He's only ever laid on one side of it, it's always had a mattress protector on it, together with a sheet and for the past 6 or so months, he lays on top of his duvet cover which I have tucked into the mattress on top of his sheet. So my son hasn't even really touched the mattress. We aren't smokers - well we had a 3 month blip over xmas but we never, ever smoke in the house and never near our son. So the mattress should be good as new x

I think it depends on how long it was used and how it was stored plus if its a smoke free home.

With my son I got the swinging crib mattress new and gave it to a friend for her to use for her baby as my so was only in the crib for 2months. It was from a smoke free house and stored in a sealed bag for 3months in our spare bedroom.

It's like the whole second hand car seat debate, I would reuse a car seat with two children but I would never buy one second hand unless I could guarantee its been looked after xx

^^ Totally agree.

I put I would reuse. Tom slept in our bed and this baby will also sleep in our bed. We've had our mattress for past 8 years and it's still in good condition. It's only ever been me,oh and Tom who have slept in it so I am not going to buy a new one for new baby x

will re use my dds cotbed matress, I bought it new when I was preg with her, it was set up in the nursery (with sheets on ect) n used for odd day naps until 10mths old when she was moved into her nursery and slept on it until just over 3years when I moved her into the bigger room. now its sat waiting for her little sister to come. definitely not considering changing it as it isn't worn and has been stored in a bedroom all this time. attic storage or garage ect would be a no no for me to re use (mould ect)

I bought Liam's mattress brand new and he only used it for about a year. Amelia has hardly used it at all because we co-slept and she now has a single bed.
So I'll be using it a "third" time (Amelia has probably only used it for a total of 10-15 hours).

I am reusing Harrison's cotbed mattress. He's only slept in it around 25-30 nights (not whole nights either!) As we Co sleep.
