I work in venues, and started from the ground up really! I've done a bit of everything in hotels from restaurant and bar, to kitchen. The I started working in the sales office, moved to evnt co-ordinator, then Event Manager and now I'm Event Sales Manager, so in charge of the revenue for the whole hotel. It means I cover a lot of weddings, but also everything from a 2 person business lunch up to managing a press release for 1,000 people. My last Events job I had 4 co-ordinators working for me and I was responsible for £7.2 million per year. Now I've downsized after niamh, and I'm starting a job next week where I'm working on my own. Both in office, and on the road for a smaller hotel.

If you wanted to go freelance though, I could give you some info on that. :)

I enjoy being venue based. Bit of a challenge to get all the departments together, and a lot of variety. A lof of venue based organisers just do the bare minimum though, whereas I always helped every bride in every way I could. ie sourcing suppliers for them, being on hand for advice, etc. Even if it wasn't to do with the venue.

Ok, well a lot of places offer wedding planner courses. However, this is the top organisation and one that most people in the UK use:

    http://www.ukawp.com/

You can register your business with them, and then be added to their directory. You'd also want to get added onto this directory but they only take the top Event Management companies:

    http://www.theweddingassociation.co.uk/

I'd really recommend doing a couple courses if you have no experience. Remember that attending a wedding, and some of the planning is fun but its a hard job. I've been up plenty of times at 5am before an event, and the paperwork and finances are a killer! It's a great job though :)
