Hi all,

I have just moved up to second trimester and need some advice as this is my first pregnancy!

I had my first scan at 10 weeks, ever since my scan the symptoms have gone and I don't have another scan or appointment until my 20week on 22nd January.

I have been having a lot of family stress recently and am worried as I feel perfectly normal that something is wrong with the baby and its stop growing.

My midwife said I could listen to the heart beat this week and to call to arrange but she hasn't returned my phone calls or text I sent her from Monday. I feel to be honest like she thinks I am pestering her but she told me to call to arrange!

I can't go until 22nd January without checking the baby is ok  is there anything I can do?

My midwife's instructions have been made more than clear that I am not to use a home doppler and this is splashed all over my midwifery notes as she said only they should be using this specialised equipment and it panics people in to thinking there is something wrong.

please advise as I feel like I am being silly but from 13/11 (first scan) to 22/1 is a long time to wait.

Thanks xx

Sorry if i sound rude but welcome to start with but who is your midwife to tell you you cant use a doppler as you arent qualified?? i have a doppler as many people do and it doesnt harm the baby and you dont need a degree to find a heartbeat! sorry for the rant (im a little hormonal today )

She said she only doesnt want me using one as sometimes its hard to find the heartbeat and you end up with people in casualty getting scanned thinking somethings wrong when it isn't.

I only have her word to go off sorry :( I don't have any pregnant freinds or older relatives so very naive to it all x

i felt exactly the same trust me, i had my scan at 10 weeks and as it hadn't been at that 12 week milestone i thought it was going to be gone and i wasn't going to know til my 16 week midwife appointment, had that heard babies heartbeat and was fine for a few days, i have to admit that i have a home doppler and i had tried but i thought i don't know what i'm listening to so did stop til i had my appointment then i starting worrying a few days after mw appointment so started using it have to say i struggled to get it last night but didn't stress myself out as i knew it probs had its back to me im only using it though til i feel it properly as my reassurance getting to my 20 week just seemed so far away at the time and now im less then 2 weeks away from it :) so just try to relax it is normal

hi there hun ,im sure everything is fine ....also welcome over to second tri hope you enjoy your time here ,i dont see any harm in you getting a doppler you dont need to be a proffessional to find a heart beat ,if you worried tho ring her im sure she wont mine ,im very much the same tho worry about everything but dont want to bother anyone ,i had my scan at 11 wks 4 days and im a little worried too ,but its a mothers natural instint to worry about our babys that we are carrying ....

all the best hun and ring your midwife she wont mind thats what shes there forxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

That is a long time to wait and you should definitely have a 15/16 week midwife appointment to check blood pressure, do the triple test (if you want it) etc. Even the wait from 15-20 weeks was hard for me so no wonder you're worried!!

Could you call the community midwives to get in touch, or your doctors?

(Assuming you're from the UK?)

dont appologise honey i just think that the way you wrote that you had had your strict orders was a little sharp i mean i can see she would be worried but if you are concerned then other than getting a scan the only way to make sure all is there as it were is to listen on a doppler. xx

Thanks ladies I appriciate it, I am a worrier anyway unfortunatly and it just seems like every one has a lot more scans and appointments than I am having, I have only seen her twice, once to fill all my forms out and once to take my bloods and one scan. Must be different appointments in different regions? x

im a total worrier so i know how you feel, ive only had 2 appointments with my midwife too so as far as i can see its normal, my next one is at 20 weeks (next week) xx

welcome to 2nd tri and yeah it is a bit of a wait...call her to make an appointment so she can check heartbeat for you :)

Hey there I am at about the same stage as you. I think you should try to get a listen to the heartbeat. I have heard mine twice cos I was bleeding and getting myself stressed out. They seem to take the stress pretty seriously as its not good for the baby so I would say to keep trying and get them to let you have a listen. It only takes 5minutes of their time.

Having said all that its well documented that symptoms lessen after you get into 12 weeks so I wouldn't worry too much. Are you starting to show at all yet? Can you feel your uterus above your pubic bone yet? All these are signs of the baby growing so maybe check all that too.

Hope this helps. PM me if you like.

i think its rediculous that ur midwife said to not use a doppler at home!! Take no notice of her!!!

If i were you i would keep on phoning your midwife and whether she thinks you are pestering her or not its important to put your mind at ease! A stressed and worried mom is not good x x x

Hi its very natural to worry and think there is something wrong with your baby, but after 12 weeks symptoms do tend to fade for most people. Try ringing your doctors and explain you haven't heard back from your midwife they may be able to sort things out with her for you.also could you afford a private scan?lots of places offer them and they vary in price but might be worth looking into if you're really worried. :hugs: xxx

Thanks guys, I have been trying to call her today and her "24hr" mobile is switched off so I will have a look in my book for the next port of call when I get home from work, I am sufferring with a bad back right above my coccyx bone so I need to speak to her anyway.

I am not showing really I do have a hard belly and it does look more round when I look in the mirror I just look like I have eaten a KFC bucket to myself! The only thing is I hate milk and havent drunk anything with milk in for around 15years from being young at school and today I got a massive urge for a strawberry milkshake so have just sipped that, maybe that's my first craving! Xx
