So, what an interesting weekend I had!!!!

Developed a really nast pain on Saturday afternoon, just under my bump on the right hand side, and had no idea what it was. My best guess at this point was that the baby was lying on a nerve or something else that was causing pain? Anyhoo, had tickets to see Peter Kay, which I was determined not to miss, so I went, but was literally having to hold my stomach every time I laughed cos it hurt so much :haha:

By the time I woke up on sunday morning though, the pain was excruciating and I couldn't even stand up straight - at this point was getting a bit worried as the baby was clearly moving all over the place, so the lying on a nerve theory was looking unlikely!

Not really knowing what to do I rang NHS direct, gave my symptoms and waited for the call back - when I finally got the call back the nurse who rang was literally the most unhelpful person I have ever had the misfortune to speak to. To cut a long story short she told me she had no idea what was wrong, and that I should ring the ante-natal clinic at the hospital I was due to give birth at. I pointed out that it was the weekend and the clinic was only open Monday to Friday, at which point she told me to ring the labour ward, and if they couldn't help call an out of hours Dr, and that she couldn't offer any further advice. :growlmad:

So, rang the labour ward at my hospital, and fortunately they were lovely and told me to come in, and that they would check me out to see if they could identify the problem. On arrival they took me and DH to a delivery suite and went through all the symptoms again, checked the babys heartrate and movement and took blood and urine samples. They then told me that it was likely that I was either suffering from appendicitis or a urinary tract infection!

The Obstetrician was amazed that NHS direct hadn't told me to go straight to the nearest A&E as a matter of urgency as the symptoms I was describing were apparently classic appendicitis!!!

Fortunately after 5 hours and a barrage of tests they confirmed a unrine infection and sent me home with antibiotics and strict instructions to come back if there was no improvement in a day or two, or if the pain suddenly got worse - major relief!

On the plus side I can say that I'm now 100% happy with where we will be delivering our baby - they were amamzing and the facilities are excellent, however, I can't help being furious that NHS direct could potentially have missed something like this and relied on a labour ward being happy to deal with me, or being able to get an out of hours Dr in a decent timeframe - if it had been appendicitis it could have been extremely dangerous for both me and the baby! :growlmad::growlmad::growlmad:

Sorry for the extremely long post, but really had to get that off my chest........

omg that's awful that they were so unhelpful!!! ive had problems with them in the past where they just havent helped at all. i give up with them now coz they dont seem to know what they're talking about half the time.

glad the labour ward were so helpful. they were really good to me when i had to go in, i was getting back pains and strong period pains at 26 weeks. they were happy to help and checked me out. turns out mine was also a uti in the end. glad u found out the probelm though hun and it was nothing too bad. xxx

I work for the nhs and have absolutely no faith in nhs direct! My friend contacted them because her 3mth old daughter seemed to have a really bad cold and her breathing wasn't great. Despite being told this, they just told her to give her calpol and check her in the morning - she actually stopped breathing about an hour after that and was rushed to hospital by ambulance. She was diagnosed with a severe chest infection and spent a week in hospital. My friend felt she had been treated like a neurotic mother - even though it was her third child! My sister and sil have all had similar experiences. Dont trust them at all and would rather just head to a&e.

I've had two good experiences with nhs direct.

However my mw told me never to call nhs for pregnancy related stuff asthey probably won't be able to help. Just to call direct to labour ward or mw.

Hmm, well I think that's the last time I'll bother with them - they really don't seem to have a clue.

Fortunately not long to go in this pregnancy now, so hopefully it won't be an issue again anyway.
