I have no idea about these consoles and which one would be the best for me to get my 5 going on 6 year old???

Could someone please tell me the difference between them and which one would be best for him to play games and use etc.

Thank you as i am a very out of touch mum lol lol :blush:

Hiya
Just thought I'd mention that apparently the 3ds is dangerous for childrens eyes!

https://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/3ds-might-permanently-damage-children-s-eyes-922105

The ds lite is the basic one, dsi has a camera dsi xl has larger screens.
My soon to be six year old loves his ds he likes the 'cars' game and the 'nemo' one too. Also mario kart and super mario brothers and his little brother loves cooking mama lol.
Hope this helps.

tbh i would just buy the 3ds... the price has come down so much lately, also gives you much more choice of games x (in the long term) but i don't really know anything about 6 year olds or whats considered an appropriate amount of money for console for a 6 year old so i might just be useless :p x

I am getting my 4 year old one for christmas and I am going to go with the DSi. The DS is a bit basic, the DSi XL, I dont see the real need for a bigger screen and as for the 3DS thats a big no, I wouldnt even let my 13 year old have a 3DS, I have heard to many bad stories about them concerning kids eyes and headaches. The DSi has a camera so they can have fun with that plus you can go online, so that means mummy can have a go ;)

The 3DS is only dangerous if you play it for too long on the 3D setting (which can be turned off with a simple slider at the side). I myself would buy the 3DS as it is a great console, and having all of the ones you stated (other than the DSiXL) the 3DS is the best (you can even take 3D photos). Especially since it has gone down so much in price (I bought it at full price :grr:), but if you are concerned about the 3D, then go for the DSi, as it is more portable than the XL (which is very clumsy lloking IMO) and has a camera on it.

However, to further confuse you, the DS can also play gameboy advance games as well as DS games, as it has another slot (which none of the others have)

So whichever you feel is best suited to your child, but I'd definitely say the 3DS xx

no offence but i think those stories are complete rubbish about it damaging your eyes etc... maybe some people let their children play for too long then it will hurt obviously x but end of the day its your child so up to you too say if you think its safe or not, personally i wouldn't worry

Edit: the 3d setting can be turned up or down to suit the users taste, so if the 3d hurts your eyes just turn it down, i think as fair as money goes, it would be like waiting till late next year and buying a wii lol just before the wii U comes out... so in my opinion you would be loosing money in the long term..
that being said some people have a sensitivity to the 3d and it causes headaches, but damaging - no no no x

I went to buy a 3ds and it didn't work for me, it doesn't work fir 14% of people might be worth checking it works for your child before buying one x

My little man is 5 and I am getting him the DSi, he wanted the 3Ds but there is no way in this world he's getting it I played one in out local asda for a few minutes and believe me it's not good for your eyes. xx

My little girl had the dsi but I wish I had known about the dsi XL coming out as I would have waited, my Gran has it and it is fab. I would def say get the XL!

Maizie is having just a DSi, i dont see the point in a xl! and 3D is a no no, as the others have said x

^^The picture is MUCH clearer and just generally easier to use all round. I would think you don't need to strain your eyes as much either

i think its nicer on the eyes, but it must be a preference thing, but too say its bad in general is a bit of an over statement :) x tbf tho i wouldn't even buy my LO a nintendo as i think he wouldn't look after it .. he breaks EVERYTHING, last week he managed to put a hole in his wooden easel :/ alot of games will be 3d soon .. for every console so people better get used to it :p x

My 3 year old has a DSi which her auntie brought for her, and I have a 3DS which she occasionally play's on, the 3ds is for over 6's as there was some concern over it causing headaches etc, however you can turn the 3d setting off so it is worth it especially now it has been reduced so much.

Yeah I was told that pretty soon all games will be for the 3ds so any new games brought out won't be available on the other's. Not sure how true it is, but a member of staff at GAME told me

yup :) be like the switch to GBA all over again :) you could play your old games on them but after maybe a year ? all the games were only GBA (the small cartridges)

This is great :)

Am getting one for ds1 for Christmas (he'll be 3 months shy of his 6th birthday). I was thinking of getting him the dslite but now am wondering if the dsi isn't a better option as it has the camera? I was told the ds lite screen was way better light wise? does the dsi have a good screen? thanks!!!

I think when it comes to the whole which DS it is down to trial and error, which is best for your child and which one you feel comfortable letting your child have. In our house the 3DS is a big NO NO, due to reviews but that is only my point of view. the best thing to do would be to go to your local games shop and ask to let your little man handle a few, see which one he prefers and which one you would feel comfortable getting him :)

I really do hope that not all games will eventually be 3D, I mean come on seriously WHY ??? all it does is strain my eyes and give me headaches :( and I am sure I am not the only one that feels like this. x x

no, they will likely have an option :) to turn it off like the 3ds does .. hence why i think its the best choice, as it won't need replaced when they are old anuff to use the 3d .... x

Well I hope it will not be for a few years yet, Dec cant even have a 3DS for another 2-3 years anyway, are they not for age 6 or 7 ??

age 6 :) but kids use things so quickly these days.. i just assume most people would let their under 6's use them tbh x
