No longer PCOS, so what is wrong?

So, brief introduction, I have 3 children already and was waiting to stop bf #3 to really start ttc #4. I assumed af would return when I finished feeding. It hasn't so I have been to the doctors and have tried progesterone to induce af, still no luck. I then tried 150mg clomid and nothing happened. i have had blood tests and ultrasound which all came back normal but no signs of ovulation.

I have now been to the specialist who did the ovarian drilling before I got pregnant with my first. She has told me that there are no signs of PCOS anymore and so no obvious reason for not ovulating. She has prescribed the pill for 3 weeks to induce af to make sure nothing is blocked.

Anyone have ideas or similar stories? I'm trying to remain positive as she also suggested early menopause as a possibility :-(

I don't have any suggestions but my Dr told me PCOS is life long. She is a reproductive endocrinologist so maybe her take on PCOS is different because PCOS is an endocrine disorder? She said it can be controlled by diet or medicine or both but I'd have it even after menopause since it starts with the pancreas and not the reproductive system.

Thanks for the reply. That is very interesting. My doctor purely looked at my ultrasound results and said I am no longer PCOS as my ovaries are no longer poly cystic. I will definitely ask more questions when I go back for review, just trying to figure out what I should be asking!

I don't have PCOS, but I believe this to be true. It is an endocrine disorder and you do not HAVE to have cysts present on your ovaries to have it.

Yes to what the previous poster said.

My RE said that for awhile people didn't entirely understand PCOS. Now they are doing real studies and tests. Symptoms include cysts on ovaries, hardened uterus, amenorrhea (lack of periods) high estrogen, high testosterone, hair loss, hair growth, weight gain, acne, moodiness, infertility, etc. PCOS could present as all or some or none of those, but it's base disorder involves the pancreas and insulin levels and how your body manages the insulin. It's the insulin that inhibits ovulation and not the cysts.

I would be interested to know how your doctor thinks you have managed to 'solve' PCOS.

I am currently on a very low GI diet and trying a natural approach to PCOS.

As I understand it, the PCOS is caused by high levels of insulin, affecting your reproductive hormones and causing the formation of multiple non-mature follicles rather than one mature one - so perhaps this is reversible by sustained lower levels of insulin?

Thanks for the feedback lovely ladies. I'm wondering now if I just mis-interpreted my specialist. Maybe she meant my ovaries do not have cysts anymore but wasn't referring to me not having PCOS anymore?? I will definitely be asking for clarification when I go back. I have never had any treatment for insulin problems, although they did start me on metformin but I was so ill they stopped it immediately.
My OBGYN believes I got pregnant last time after a short time of TTC as I managed to lose 10kgs. He believes even a small weight loss is enough to kick start the body to ovulate. i'm thinking I should be doing that again as I haven't lost the "baby" weight yet but haven't been disciplined enough so far.

Hi Tayla,

I can't really help with your question but am in a similar situation (seen from your signature) as in I conceived my first DS after ovarian drilling and clomid & DS #2 naturally 5 months later. I am currently trying to conceive #3 naturally and wondered how long it took you to conceive your second & third children?

Did you use clomid again? I am currently in the middle of what i think is a long cycle so am considering taking clomid if I get af sometime soon. I went on the bcp when DS#2 was born for a year and am a bit concerned that it might have messed me up a bit again!?

Just a bit about me, I was diagnosed with PCOS without 'cysts' on my ovaries as I have more than 3 of the main symptoms - higher than normal levels of testosterone, amenorrhea (pre-childbirth!) bad skin and hair growth. From what I have read on PCOS it does seem that it is all insulin related, although when I had an insulin resistance blood test the results came back normal? & I have a normal BMI of 19/20! Think I've almost come to accept its one of those infuriating frustrating things that I will never understand

Hi, I didn't need clomid for #2 &#3. I can't remember exactly but I think I had one period and then got pregnant with DS1. And I was still breastfeeding at the time. DS2 took a bit longer, i stopped breastfeeding and was seeing the OBGYN and we were talking about starting clomid and I got pregnant after about 10 months I think. It did take longer than I wanted as there is 2.5years between 2 & 3 and I was hoping for less than 2 years.

I got my BMI down to 21 back then, I'm up around 26 atm. I have started looking at my food intake again and just starting proper exercise again.
