Why cant people just get on with their own lives grrrrrr!!!! I was walking home from the school run and this lady who lives on my street came up to me and oh and said someones gonna grass you up for running a business from a council house?!! My oh is a self employed kitchen fitter has the van with signs on etc i didnt think it was illegal  I spoke to my next door neighbours and they said she was barmey and is always trying to get ppl into trouble because she got caught benefit theiving last year. I personally think shes jealous as my oh did a beautiful kitchen for one of her neighbours so shes basically seen her a**e!!

It isnt illegal is it?? Ive searched on the web but cant find anything ive never heard of it before?

i cant imagine how it can be illegal, people like that really should keep their noses out!
my old next door neighbour used to grass everyone to the council for stuff that wasnt even the truth and yet he was claiming god knows what falsely, some people are shocking!

when she first told me i laughed and said are you being serious hows that illegal?! As she was talking i realised it was her who had phoned the council and was just being plain nosey! I think its pregnancy brain cos i started to second guess myself and get worked up. My oh is fuming with her ive had a crap day as it is my pelvis clicked out this morning and im in agony so weirdos like her is the last thing i need!

the only way u can get in trouble is if ur both claimin benefits... so maybe she's got the wrong end of the stick nd assumed thats what ur doin?
but still... what a nosy cow!
xx

aww hun it doesnt sound like you've had a good day:hugs:
no wonder your OH was angry, cant blame him at all!
at the end of the day you know you've done nothing wrong, long as all the relevant people know that he runs his own business it cant be illegal.
shes just a sour old cow because she got caught out!

Check your tenants handbook, we're housing society and they just like to know (our neighbours run a business from their HA house - councils/HA just like to be aware if you do) but as far as I'm aware it isn't illegal. Tell her to butt out!!

No everythings above board just think she likes causing trouble! x

I didnt know that thankyou i will have a look x

Hi hun, my OH is a self employed demolition machine driver and we live in a housing association house. This lady must be loopy. Is she really suggesting that you aren't allowed to be self employed if you are a tenant of a house rather than an owner!?

Maybe she is just peed off that people are making an honest living, instead of her who had to commit benefit fraud...and get caught!!

It would be different if you had your own little sweat shop running from your front room, but just because you have a van parked outside it hardly makes anything illegal!
xxx

its not illegal, the only thing u aint allowed to do is run a business from the council house, ie a shop or sumin where ur using the house if u get what i mean x

thats what my partner said its not like hes running a showroom the house isnt bloody big enough lol. Ive calmed down now im gonna leave her to it she will feel stupid when she phones the council and theres nothing untoward. I really wanna move i try and keep myself to myself on this street but ive had nothing but trouble! Im sure its because i have 3 children and dress them nicely and they dont go to the nearest school so they think im up myself which im far from i just want the best for them! x

i thought the same thing apparantley she was claiming disability, one day she was in a wheel chair the next she was riding a bike!! Sounds like she wants everyone in trouble now because shes being made to work

We own our house, however, it is ex council (we bought from the person who bought from the person who bought from the council - still with me??) and it clearly states my title deeds that we are not allowed to run a business from home. I don't see how they think they can dictate that to us as we own it and it is no longer council, but that is what it states.

They also contacted us when we first moved in to complain about the state of our garden, the previous owner had told us it would be cleared before we moved in; but it wasn't and it was November, so we weren't able to cut the grass until April!

I'd check with your council to be honest with you.

Hes not selling anything from here or anything like that hes just self employed x

My neighbour where I used to live done this on me and we didnt have a buisness, she knew that because we rented we couldn't have that?? first i heard of anything going on was when my landlord called and asked did I have a car valeting business ! all because my mate would leave his car in my drive as he had no room for it at his and worked on it now and again! wtf! then environmental health came down to. I wasnt even allowed to keep a car in my drive way after that. She had cops on me and all and social services and cops on everyone around there.

I dont miss that estate at all and it was quite a posh one but she was the only interfering so and so in the corner who just couldn't keep out of any ones business!

where where I live everyone gets on with their own thing, no one is in your stuff and they are all quite the same type of poeple , interesting characters and genuine. Love where I live now , no one passes you without waving, no one is stuck up and no one is in your biz.

I hate people that just cant and wont get on with any one, I keep to myself because thers always one of them ffs!

People making a living for themselves is not illegal, tell the silly old woman to keep her mouth shut lol x

I would definitely check your deeds, just to make sure. My inlaws deeds say they aren't allowed to run any sort of business from home (and not just a shop sort of thing, they mean anything). It's not a council house though. Their deeds also say they can't have a caravan!

But really, she's just a nasty nosey old woman. I hate neighbours like that!

Its not illegal as long as hes not using the house as an office so to speak... i think it also includes using the landline aswell... if he has a mobile he recieves work calls on then thats fine or has an office he goes to thats also fine... also his business must be registered etc x

thanks for your advice ladies ive been looking into it and hes not doing anything wrong, would love to be a fly on the wall when she phones them lol, no doubt next week ill be faking my pregnancy or something lol!!
x

I think this is different in different areas, my parents are self employed and they run the business from their council house - they work outside and don't have a premises as such but use a room as the office. The council is aware of this and they are not breaking their tenancy agreement as they checked it out thoroughly before they started the business. I would give the council a ring and pre-empt any interfering busy bodies. HTH
