My LO was born 1/6/12 and had 3 messy diapers at the hospital before we were discharged Sunday morning. Sunday we started supplementing her with formula bc I am unable to produce enough breastmilk due to not enough glandular tissue. So she gets one 2.5 oz bottle of breastmilk each day along with eating every 2-4 hours, 2-3 oz of formula each time. She had not pooped so Thurs our pediatrician told us to give her a glycerin suppository. We did and a few hours later she had a huge messy diaper. Has not had one since. She's sleeping well every few hours, eats very well, doesn't seem to be in any discomfort... but we are worried. Anyone gone through this experience? Her tummy is soft and she doesn't seem constipated... but what could be going on? :nope:

Worried New Mom

my baby had poops more than once a day until I started supplementing with formula, then he went for 3 days without pooping. I brought him in the bath with me, and while he was sitting in his little seat in the warm water, I massaged his tummy, and a few minutes later he pooped all over me! For him, tummy massages really work, I massage him every day, and usually it's about 15 minutes after that he has a poop.

I'm not sure what to suggest but we changed my LO to FF this week. Whilst BF he used to poo after every feed but since using formula he didn't go for almost a day. I started to worry as I really don't want him to get constipated so I read about baby massage on there tummys. It helps stimulate the intestine. Within 30ins of doing it we had the biggest poop ever! He has been as normal ever since! Try it may help??

It's only been 2 days which is nothing to worry about. My lo probably goes about 5 times a week now. When we first changed from bf to ff she went 5 days with no poo so the healthvisitor advised 1oz of water with 1tsp of fresh orange juice and she poo'd within half an hour! Since then she is pretty regular. It just takes time to get themselves into the swing of things. Formula takes longer for babies to digest which is why your lo will be taking longer to poop at the mo. X

Even though not pooping is pretty standard, I'll do the massages if he's fussy.

Stroke down from chest to belly 15 times. Hold his legs up to his belly for 15 seconds. Stroke in clockwise motion on his belly 15 times. And hold his legs up for another 15 seconds.

First time I did this, he pooped before I even finished after 24 hours of no poop and constant pushing.

He's almost 10 weeks now but I set him in his Bumbo comfortably for the first time this morning and could not believe how much he pooped in that position, haha. So, that's something for later down the road.

As soon as I switched my LO to formula, he quit pooping. It's awful, but he went after a few days and has been going again, just less... not even every day now because of the formula. Their bodies will get used to it, though.

my LO doesnt go for 4 or 5 days at a time. its perfectly normal. he was pooing 3 times a day until he got colic, during the colic we had to use suppositorys or "help him" with a q-tip and vasaelne every 3 days but now he's 16 weeks he's pooing on his own fine every 2-3 days :)
if he goes over it doesnt worry us. Since starting to weane him he's been pooing a lot easier too! just do what feels right. my HV was very wrong with most the advice she gave me

hi,

firstly, it takes two weeks for your breasts to produce anywhere near enough milk, so dont worry about your milk supply yet. :)

breastfed babies can poop as little as once a week and thats normal. even with a top up of formula, this is ok too.

try this too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1kQ-7gREcM

i swear by it

All I do is start at the belly button and work clockwise rubbing in a circular motion..

I think my little man is a bit constipated I'm primarily breastfeeding but have given him the odd bottle of formula to settle him. He hasn't pooed for 2 days which I know is acceptable for breastfed babies but he seems uncomfortable and keeps straining. I've tried giving him boiled water and gave him a nice warm bath and massaged his tummy after it but as of yet nothing has happened! I don't know what else to do x
