Elodie turns one on 3rd if May and she's having a spongebob themed birthday. I'm a bit wary about asking someone to make her a cake because I know spongebob is hard to do and one little mistake and it looks wrong :( they do spongebob cakes in asda and tesco and other supermarkets so I'm debating whether to get one of them? But then everyone I know is having these huge cakes made for their babies birthdays so I feel bad for buying a shop bought one :dohh:

What would you do? Would you risk it? Or just buy a shop bought one? Thank you! x

Shop is fine!!

I made Dylan's, but I like cake making so didn't mind it looked a bit pants! Lol.

Could you try yourself or is that not a good idea? Lol

Here's Dylan's (based on his favourite toy):

As a cake maker I would say do what you're more comfortable with

Sponge bob isn't particularly difficult for decent cake maker at all. If you look at their previous work you will get a feel for how accurate their portrayal of characters is. You find that with supermarket cakes (compared to bespoke/fresh/handmade) can have a really rough finish. I had to buy one once as my oven was broke and I was stripping it and redoing it any way but I was quite shocked at how bad the fondant and colours were.

Or like pp said you could always have a go yourself, or ask a recommend cake maker whose work you like for a quote.

Either way lo will love it

Do whatever you are happy with hun.

I think a professional cake maker would most likely have no problem making a sponge bob cake. However if you are worried about it not looking right there is nothing wrong woth buying it from the shop.

I am gonna make Bs cake even if it turns out shit as i LOVE baking and dont get the opportunity much these days lol.

Ps I absolutely love the name Elodie! I have even managed to convince my OH to consider it if we have another girl. Do you pronounce it like Melody without the M?

I'm guilty of buying shop bought every birthday  tbh though I don't see anything wrong with it the kids don't really care as long as they get a cake, although now my son has been diagnosed with coeliac disease I have no choice but to make his as I want to make 100% sure it's gluten free with no contamination. I'm sure it's going to look rubbish but as I said before as long as it looks slightly like what you were trying to do & they get to eat the cake I don't think they care what it looks like! Lol xx

Thank you everybody! I've seen some rubbish spongebob cakes that's why I was worried. I can bake pretty well but not decorate :dohh: plus my oven is naffed! I think I might take the risk and get someone to do it, I've got a friend who's relative does cakes and I've looked through her books, they're good so I think she could do it fine :)

JessyG - thank you :)! Yes it's melody without the m, everyone gets confused how to say it, normally they say E-load-e :haha: I absolutely love the name and can't imagine her being called anything else now, suits her so well.

To be honest at that age they don't even really eat the cake so it's more about what you would prefer. For me I just love homemade cakes and I think shop bought ones aren't as good, but it wasn't as important to me how much the cake looked like the character (we went for Peppa pig). I loved the cake we got and although it didn't look like Peppa pig it was yummy and had plenty cake for everyone. So I say just go with what's more important. Try having a look on Facebook at local cake makers and go through their pictures to see if they've ever done a spongebob one before, that's what I did.

This was Emilia's cake last week and everyone said how good it was

I am in no way a cake maker, but my step son requested a spongebob cake. This was my first ever attempt at icing a cake. Give it a go, you might be surprised with what you can do :)

I like baking so I make myself. A good cake maker can easily do spongebob.

Interestingly if it's just decorating the cake you are worried about. You could try doing a frozen buttercream transfer. It's basically tracing and colouring with icing. These several videos online. It's how I did my friend an original my little pony.

I made Billy's. It was crap, but I was determined to do it myself. That was what I thought was more important than what it looked like. Plus I had a very nice time doing it! He had two - one was Upsy Daisy and the other was a bus with the family on board (you can get photos put onto rice paper). I would post a photo but I dont know how!

Yeah i can imagine you may have to pronounce it for some folk. Its lovely and from her pic i def think she suits it!

Good luck with the birthday planning!
