The room we will be changing into a nursery has ugly old-fashioned false wood panelling. The panels are of various widths. my dilemma is how to paint it. I have a few ideas but I don't quite know how it would look. First off I'm going to say that we will be using a neutral green color most likely.

One is to alternate between two shades of the same color.

The other is to use the same exact shade but in different finishes. (ie flat and semigloss.)

My final thought is that if both of this ideas would look odd is to just paint the whole room the same color. (our room is a neutral off white over the same panelling and doesn't look bad.)

My biggest concern is the alternating on various size boards. I know both ideas would look great if they were all the same width but we're not that lucky. Any inout or different ideas would be greatly welcomed. :)

Not sure what to suggest, but we're in the same boat: Jake's room also has the ugly wood paneling with various sizes. We won't be using it for anything but "baby stuff storage"...for the first year, he'll be sleeping in our room. But after that, time to move to his own room.
We rent, so I don't know if painting is an option for us. :(
But I do like the idea of the alternating colors. I've seen this done when I was researching what in the world to do with the wood panelled room for a nursery, before we had even conceived...I remember one room in particular that looked really great, a girl's nursery that had soft pastel colors mixed with white panels.

Boy or girl coming?? I think it would be sweet to decorate the room in maybe 3-4 pale gender themed colors that you can mix your own decor with. With my boys I decided on yellow, white and black. I did black furniture with yellow and white decor. The curtains are black with yellow and white fabric stars(self made) with yellow valances. Older son went into a full size bed at 2 (health reasons) and his comforter is white with black stars. I added some light green and blue with the decor on the hutch and changing table and rocking chair. DS#1 passes away a few months ago at 3.5yrs old so only DS #2 is on nursery. We like our kids close so DD on the way now will go in there so I plan to add light purple! All three kids have wooden block names painted differently using the colors of the room so DD coming will have light green and purple incorporated in her name. Anyways enough with mine! Maybe you can do the panels three diff light colors alternating on the main wall and paint the rest a neutral off white or white color. The accent wall will look cool! You could then paint wooden letters white and hang them on that accent wall with ribbon and put crib on that wall so it's the focal point. Then you can use those colors and pick out decor around the nursery. Hope that helped!

Just saw its a boy!! Congrats. We are due the same week! I'm the 15th. We are expecting our first girl!!!!

KhaluaCupcake- I saw a similar girls nursery. But I'm not quite that bold to do something like that. I prefer to stay with neutral greens so that when we move (in 2.5 years) it might be acceptable to leave it that color. We also rent but have an awesome landlord who is very flexible with changes we make while we're here.

KALJ_mum- you just gave me a great idea. Maybe if I choose 3 different shades of the same color and do most of the room the lightest and alternate either the two darker ones or even all 3 on the panels it will look a lot better as an accent wall. Thanks a lot ladies! Now I'm all excited. It might even work well enough to leave when we move if I choose just the right colors. :)

Do you have a digital camera? If so, take a picture of the wall and room. Upload it to your computer then just grab a generic photoshop or paint program and mess around with putting your color pain in there.
I'm not sure of your style, so I don't know which way you should choose! If you are really, really, REALLY ambitious you can take caulking or spackle and fill in all the grooves. I warn you, it takes a long time!
