Wasnt really sure where to post this - but thought i would get the best advice on here.

My 11 month old is just starting nursery and is on her 2nd day. Yesterday was OK apprently, a few tears but generally good - i think she enjoyed herself!

Today apparently she has been crying all day whenever she is put down (not like her) so is v clingy to the staff there, so much so, i have to go early and pick her up!!

I know all babies cry (and mums too!) but is this normal, the fact nursery are saying i should come and get her says to me that this isnt normal.

For those who have had children settle into nursery - what have been your experiences???

thanks xx

how many hours has she been doing?

zane had afew weeks to settle in, starting from 30mins there without me to the 1 hour and the afew days of 3 hours. he had afew tears n cried not to go but he loves it now

Im a nursery manager and all children are different. The reason why staff may call you collect is that if your LO spends the whole day in a state of anxiety then she will make a negative association.

What settling in sessions did you have, how much info did they take on her - favorite toys, activities etc... does she have a comforter that she can take with her etc.

Please dont worry , I have never seen a child not settle into nursery. Perseverance really is the key xxxx

Thanks for this - we have done quite a lot of settling prob about 5 sessions - from 1 hour to 3 hours. yesterday she was in from 8am until 230pm and was pretty much ok. Today shes been really clingy and tearful. Theyve suggested another settling session on friday before I start back at work next week.

The prob is - i can't really just leave work to come and get her next week, its soo heartbreaking when she had such a good day yesterday!

she doesnt really have a comforter but i gave them dummies which she usually only has for naps but said give them to her if shes upset whilst we are settling her in.

I guess i just get the feeling this is out of the ordinary, that she is a "problem baby"

when shes not really a crier under normal circumstances....

:-((

Ring the nursery ask if possible she can do a settle tomorrow and Friday and explain that simply leaving work when it is not an emergency is going to be a problem.
Can you have some one familiar on standby if she does become very upset?
Also in terms of a comfort object, just having a favorite toy or item from home can be a good security anchor .

Aw hon - I remember this so well. Please dont worry - H cried every day of her settling in days, then when I went back to work the following week there were no problems and she absolutely LOVED it.

Take comfort in the fact that the staff contacted you to let you know she's having an off day today and that they wouldnt just make her lump it. Its sooooo hard I know, but she will love it. By week 3 or 4 H used to yell that I was picking her up to go home!

xx :hugs:

hiya thanks everyone - i never thought id be so emotional about this!

she doesnt really have a favourite toy - but i sent her upsy daisy doll with her, no idea if it helped at all!!!

We have another couple of hours of settling on Friday, so hopefully that will go a bit better!

xxx
