Hiya

I am not sure if anyone can advise but maybe you OH's may know :D

We have virgin media broadband 10mb (unlimited) with an actual speed of approx 7.5mb I think. Their prices are getting silly and so we are thinking of moving to sky after about 5 years with virgin. Anyway sky offer 20mb (unlimited) broadband with an actual speed of approx 6.5mb. Now hubby likes to go on some of his xbox games online and I was wondering if what sky have available is decent for xbox live? Sky are saying there shouldnt be any lag problems etc.

Help!! :D

xx

my brother has got sky broadband and xbox live and he is very pleased with it! x

we used our sky broadband for xbox live but we changed to o2 caus OH wasnt happy paying for speeds we werent gonna get due to the line quality in our area and o2 have been great

We've found that Sky worked better for xbox live. No lags at all and we've had it for a yr and a half, defo worth it. Virgin are a rip off x

Thanks. We cant afford to swap just the broadband to one provider as we get a discount with virgin for having tv, phone and broadband yet they are still expensive!!! I know that it is very unlikely you will get the actual advertised speed with any supplier but I am worried about changing as have heard some people have ended up with like 0.3mb and things like that!!

My OH prefers virgin to sky for his xbox live. I think sky are terrible, and BT are even worse. Sky try to rope you in with good deals but we found there were alot of hidden charges. We were paying about £80 pm with them, yet if any of your equipment breaks it's a nightmare to get through to them and you have to pay to have the equipment replaced/fixed. Virgin was getting a little to expensive for us too, but we phoned them and asked if there was anyway they could get our bills down or we may consider moving. They now give us tv, phone line and the same Internet speed as you for £35 pm. And they fix any problems free of charge xx

Hmm it is so confusing what to do! We pay a little under £80 at the moment with virgin for V+ box, xl tv, weekend tele calls, 10mb broadband, box in bedroom, sky sports package and HD channels. We were going to get rid of the hd channels and extra box in bedroom and then the sports package but I want to try and keep the sports package for hubby as he has already cancelled his gym membership. That would work out at about £66.25 a month (£43.75 without sports package). I told them I could do with paying less and they were just saying get rid of this this and this but werent offering any deals and we have been with them for about 5 years. They told me one time if we cancel the home phone then we will save £17 but when I called to do it I was told we were getting a discount for having tv phone and broadband so if cancelled phone would be paying out more!!! :growlmad:

We have sky plus HD with the basic variety package plus the knowledge package which is £20.50, the unlimited broadband is now £7.50 (initially we didn't pay this but the broadband included in the £20 deal was NOT unlimited) we also have their line rental (normally unlimited broadband is £12.50). Then the line rental is £11.25 with free evening and weekend calls (NOT MOBILES) and call charges to 08 and mobiles is fairly high and our total bill is usually £50/£60.
As we live out in the sticks we only get 3.5 speed but better than next door who get 1.5/1.75 with BT.
Hubby sometimes has a few probs with his PC online games not being quick enough which he never got when we were at the old house but it was super download speed there.

Thanks. For variety package, music package & news package, Sky+ box, unlimited 20mb internet, eve and weekend calls we are looking at paying £40.25 (extra £20.25 for sports package - which is £22.50 with virgin and not as many sports channels. Lol.) Also free installation and we do not have a BT line so they will install a sky compatible line which would normally cost £39 for free. I am just a little worried incase something breaks and like someone said above you have to pay to get it fixed. Lol.

We are in a city about 10 mins drive from centre and we are 1.2km approx from the exchange where the broadband is started from I believe.

Your basic package looks only to be about a few pounds different to ours, we are thinking of getting a couple more channel packages because there are a lot of channels we don't get which we would like which is a pain in the ass but to get the full package or to go with another provider is a lot of money.
They also installed a free line for us too, I didn't know you had to pay if it goes wrong though.
DH doesn't think you'll have a problem with the speed, you can test what speed you are ACTUALLY getting with your virgin by going to https://www.speedtest.net/ because what they say you can get and what you actually receive varies apparently.

Okey doke thank you!! Do you have the sky+ box and have you had many problems with them? I am quite worried regarding things breaking then not being able to afford to fix and being without a service we would still be paying for! Lol. xx

ADDED: Virgin advertised 10mb but we get approx 7.5mb.

We have Bt at home and my partner has xbox live. I think their prices are very reasonable too. X x

Thanks. I looked at BT but they want £30 fee and £6 delivery costs. Lol.

yeah if you go in my threads started u will see a thread i recently posted about the problems wev had with virgin!

If you find a way of having tv and internet separate, orange are brilliant. i have must faster speed then i ever did with virgin, iv done it just and the download speed is around 8.2mbps and iv seen it above 9. my OH uses xbox live with no problems. it was also the cheapest we could find at the time x

We had the option of going to orange as we have contracts with them for years but because we dont have a BT phone line at our property it isnt possible :(

Yes it's the Sky+ HD box (not the brand new type but the year old version), nope we havn't had any real probs touch wood, it's crashed once or twice and we've had a couple of times with no signal due to bad weather, not sure if that is normal or not. We've had it a year and we have never had it before or any other digital/satellite TV so can't compare to anything else I am afraid.
Our friend had a box go wrong and theirs was replaced by sky though, presumably it was because it was faulty and not done through misuse?

Hmm just been looking and with quidco I could get approx £65 cashback if I sign up to sky through them! And then the £25 M&S vouchers :D Lol

xx

everyone I know who have had sky broadband, have been extremely disappointed with it, and switched over because it kept dropping out.

We're with Virgin media, paying £37 a month for medium tv, unlimited broadband, free weekend calls and v+box . We've never had any problems with virgin, with their internet services or anything else. Hubby & I are on the xbox at least a few times a week, and we never have a laggy connection or anything

HTH xxxx

Oooo we got M&S vouchers when we went direct with sky... treated ourselves to a posh meal in. Mmmmm
