I thought that I read somewhere that newborns shouldn't be out in public for like 4-6 weeks (with the exception of doc appts). I'm due on April 5th & we'll be celebrating my grandmother's 80th birthday a week or two after that. Would it be safe to bring my newborn out if she's only a week or two old? I know I'm getting ahead of myself but I'm a worrier and I'm afraid of missing my Nana's birthday.

I took my baby out when she was 3 days old! As long as they're warm enough and not out too long I can't see any problem with it. I'm sure you'll be able to go to your nana's birthday, as long as you feel up to it!

Hadn't heard this...but would love to hear people's thoughts! Hope you can make your Nana's birthday Jess!

Ive never heard of a rule that says not to take newborns out.
We took Alex out everyday from the day after we came home and went out to Asda when he was 3 days old!

well the Mw's i saw after Naomi was born said when I feel ready to go out baby is ready to go out.

She had a few health scares and had to be taken back to the hospital 3 times in her first week or two of life, and i took her in the car to see my mum and other family when she was around 2wks.

Basically what the MW told was this,

you have to take baby outside to put them in the car to go home from hospital, if it werent safe for them to be out they would keep you in hospital longer. As long as baby is warm enough he/she will be fine and it will probably be better for them than just being stuck indoors.

i.ve never heard this, i know of plenty of people taking tiny ones out the day they come home. i know you need to wait with puppies and kitten's? Lol sorry couldn't resist!

ive never heard this
i thought it was a rule for dogs tbh not people!

Ive not heard of this and oops if thats the case cuz i was on the farm everyday with my newborn at a week old back doing my horses!

I think you can take them out whenever you feel ready, no chance im staying in for 4-6 weeks it would drive me mad!! lol

getting out and about is recommended! as long as you're up to it theres no need to stay at home. I went shopping the day after I got out of hospital. enjoy your grandmothers party and im sure your lo will be the star of the show! xx

As long as baby is healthy there shouldn't be an issue going out right away. I had both my babies on a Sunday and was out on my regular walk with my friend the next day with both. I was at Church the following Sunday. I was out for groceries before that and out to a coffee shop with girlfriends 3 days after. It all depends on if baby is healthy and how you are feeling. If you are going to be in a large group and everyone wants to hold baby get them to wash with soap and water before.

That's what went through my mind :flower:

I've seen plenty of women giving birth than taking their babies out shopping the next lol. I think it all depends on the health of both mother and baby. If either one has a health problem I don't think it would be advisable but other than that I would assume its okay. However I think its probably a question for the midwife!

:haha:

I would think as long as you have both recovered and baby is warm enough, it would be fine.

Take them out when ever you want, just make sure they're warm and you're up for it the first trip out can be a scary business lol

I would have killed to be out and about after a day or two but I was housebound for ages, the country was covered in snow and ice and I'd ended up having a section so I couldnt risk slipping over or even a foot skidding out from under me I would have ended up back in bed for days. Bleurgh it was horrible.

Thank you all! Maybe what I read was about puppies & kittens and assumed it was the same for humans. :haha:

Some religions and cultures do have this rule so it is in relation to humans, not just puppies and kittens. ;)
Just take it as it comes. Me, I'm planning to spend at least a week after the birth in my jammies just being home with KB. I have already told OH that in my maternity leave the kitchen will be going non stop so I can make food to freeze so we don't all starve as OH's cooking abilities leave much to be desired! :haha:

As long as baby is healthy you can take them out from day one. You wouldn't not take your baby to the doctor if they were sick in the first week, and tbh, that's probably one of the most germ infested places you could take them, so they will be fine going for a trip to the supermarket or wherever!

I took Dylan out when he was 3 days old. it was a bit nippy out so we had him all wrapped up, and he was fine. I on the other hand overdid it, but thats another story. x x x
