:wacko::wacko: My dentist xrayed a tooth that has been giving me hell for a few months but i never got round to getting someone to look after ollie so i could sort it :( today she said it was a 'state' and only the xray will tell her if i need a normal filling, a root canal filling or an extraction  I dislike the dentist quite alot i always have done.. and i really cant stand the thought of her pulling out a very firmly stuck in molar tooth!!!! and ive never had a root canal filling... i'm praying to god its only a normal filling but something is telling me it wont be that simple..

so who here has had a root canal filling? how did it go? I'm scared:nope::wacko:

Hun if they can save your tooth through a root filling then just grin and bear it, you won't feel anything pretty much like a normal filling only takes longer!
I had to go for a check up and they were supposed to X-ray me last week but wouldn't when I said I was pregnant!?
I've had 2 extractions of molars one each side after my wisdom teeth came in and I'd have the root canal work done over an extraction any day! Usually the nerve is damaged so you won't feel much when they're doing it...
Hope this helps! Don't panic it's honestly better than toothache! Xxxx

I had one. I was absolutely terrified after hearing all the horror stories. But it was honestly not bad in the slightest. I was so surprised! It was no worse than a normal filling but everyone had made it sound so awful I was terrified. Don't worry, if you do need root canal you'll be fine!! xx

Mines a horror story so I won't tell u babe but i've always been petrified of the dentist but if I ever need something done now I'd opt to get it out either way lol it's gone then and can never give u trouble again :) xx

I've had four root canals (or maybe five... I'm loosing count). It was a breeze. I haven't heard the horror stories, so I'm not sure what people are saying, but for me, it was very simple. I think they do it in two appointments or so. The first they kill the nerve and insert a support, and in the second they put on a crown. I had no pain, it took a little longer than a filling but it wasn't bad at all. I've also had crowns put on teeth with nerves, and that was a bit worse especially after the novocaine wore off and they hurt for like a month. I am also terrified of the dentist. Hate hate hate the dentist. But I seem to have bad teeth, so I've had many dealings with them over the years.

i think my nerve is alive and kicking cause its exposed, i cant chew on it it feels like ive been shot in the face everytime i do! :( its in a tooth thats already had a filling too :(
im gonna ask her to make it extra numb for me LOL im such a wussy, ive had enough fillings but its just blah..... :( root canal filling sounds much scarier.. :(

it's really not any scarier at all. not in my experience anyway. and like I say, I'm a total wimp. and the fact that it already has a filling is good cause it's less drilling to do!

im just scared cause its like normally u dont feel a filling happening but since i know my nerve is exposed will i feel it at all when she starts? or will it be like normal? :(

it will be like normal. I think in most of my cases the nerve was super inflamed, in one it was also super infected. Just tell her not to poke at it before the novocaine is in. honestly, I'm a huge wimp and I was fine.

My root canal was easy. I was so scared I spent the night before crying hysterically. And in the end, I felt absolutely nothing. One part kind of tickled my sinuses a bit.

qpaulina42 i told her today not to go anywhere near it and she listened to me thankfully so i wont let her prod it until i know im numb for certain!!!!!!yeah i dont think mines imflammed it just hurts when i chew on it otherwise i dont have toothache at all? i could chew on it before until i toothpicked it and slipped :|....
LaLaBelle sounds like something id do!

I have had two root canals and they were no problem. Its so great when they are done and the pain is gone... its SOOO worth it. I have had a lot of dental work and a lot of dental pain, and honestly a root canal wasn't much worse than having a cavity filled, it just takes a little bit longer. They will numb it up real good, and just think about how relieved you will feel to have it fixed and be able to eat like normal!

I have had a couple of root canals, an extraction and even a dental implant. Out of all three the extraction was only mildly uncomfortable. It is no big deal, trust me. If you are in pain right now you will be so very grateful when they fix the tooth!

Ask if your dentist will give you laughing gas. My dentist does this and it's fantastic. Almost makes going to the dentist fun. I can't believe i said that.

One thing i learned - take care of issues early or they become much bigger problems.

Goodluck!

I was ridiculously scared before my root filling but it really was no worse than a normal filling. It takes quite a bit longer but there was no pain and the tooth feels fine now (although there isn't much of the original tooth left!). Extractions should be a last resort as they can affect the structure and placement of all your other teeth. Good luck and try not to worry.

Just remembered, I took my ipod and played my music pretty loud to distract me! It worked!

I've 3 root canals, two of them were a doddle, unfortunately the third was a different story. I had an abcess underneath the tooth, the nerve was inflamed and anaesthetic wasnt touching it in the normal way. I got antibiotics but the next visit was just as painful. To help he injected my lower jaw numb, then as he drilled down injected straight into the hole he'd made in tooth. Sorry to be so graphic, but id rather tell u the truth. I gritted and beared it because I only have 24 teeth, plus that 1 hour of being uncomfortableness was better than cancer of the jaw, which a friend of mine died from for neglecting bad teeth and not having them fixed.x

Hi hun, I am a sooo afraid of the dentist too! I didnt go for 12 years then because I got insurance with work, I decided to go. well as you can imagine I needed filling & a root canal.

She offered me extaction but i didnt want a gap

And I can honestly say, it was absolutely fine! She clamped my mouth open with a guard (would definitely recommend) so you dont have to worry about keeping your mouth open. Having my ipod on helped shut out the noise. It really didnt hurt at all. It just sounds bad becasue they pull out the nerve but any good dentist will numb you up to the nines, and will not cause pain

I would go for it. I feel so much better now knowing my teeth have been sorted. I even go to the hygenist now which before, i was terrified of too x

ive had 2 root canals neither hurt like the horror stories but i will say have it out instead as i have major problems with the one still with reaccuring abcesses each time im pregnant.

hiya hun im sure you will be fine!
An extraction should be your last choice once you have tried everything else.

With a RCT you will be all numbed up! What he/she will do is basically take the nerves out (it sounds bad but isnt!) which will remove the infection and then will be clean out and filled :D
So you should never feel any pain again with that tooth as there would be no nerves in it.

It only takes a little bit longer than a normal filling.
Honestly you will be fine and just think after no pain:thumbup:
You could always ask for a numbing gel to be used before she uses the anaesthetic, so you wont even feel that :D As others have said take your ipod with you and just listen to the lyrics to the songs and by the time you know it its all done.
Ps. You should have another xray during the rct, so he/she can tell if they have taken the nerve out fully or something like that lol
xxx
