Hi girls - I posted this in 3rd tri earlier but didn't get much of a response. I was hoping you would be able to help.......

Has anyone had a sweep and not been dilated but the sweep has still caused labour to start within 48 hours??

I went to my appointment today and was disappointed to find I wasn't at all dilated. She said she pulled my cervix forward and managed to get the tip of her finger around (tmi!) and that that might start something in my body. But I'm just interested to find out how likely this might be...

I had a sweep at 11.30am and had my baby 12 hours later. Not sure if it was the sweep or the fact I was a few days over due.

2days after for me...and mw was convinced it wouldn't work!

I had a sweep at 3 days over and it did bugger all, i ended up having to be induced 9 days later... Sorry not what you wanted to hear!!

Midwife told me that if anything was going to happen it would probably be within 48 hours but then she wrote in my notes 'sweep failed' so not sure if she even actually did one.

Hope you're not waiting as long as i was and Good Luck

thanks for your replies. Do any of you know if you were at all dilated when you had the sweep? as my midwife was saying chances are 50 50 of going into labour (in general, not specifically for me), but i was wondering if you're not dilated to begin with can it really work the same.....

I had one at 12pm and was in labour by around 3pm. However I was 8 days over and 2-3cm! My friend had 3 with a closed cervix none of which worked :( sorry. Hope your LO is with you soon

I had a sweep at 41 weeKs ( I was 1 cm dilated) I had another sweep at 41+2 labour started on Saturday evening and baby arrived on Monday evening! (41+5).

I had a sweep at 41wks and went in to labour within 12hrs, I wasn't dilated when she done the sweep and he took his time to finally arrive but I'm sure it was the sweep that set me off.

I had a sweep and it didnt do a thing...I think my labour was kickstarted by a good w**k, and thats not walk! After I had finished (TMI), I went to the toilet and my waters boke and I had a show...although I didnt go into labour until 6 hours later!

Thank you so much for your replies. Sounds like it won't work for me but fingers crossed!!

had 2 sweeps, no progress. ended up induced, was glad for the pitocin =)

I had 3 sweeps in total - the first I was already 1-2cm dialated - and still ended up being induced :(

I was 1cm dilated when I had my sweep and my waters broke 12 hours later

I had a sweep at 40 weeks and it did nothing (I was not dilated, cervix was way back and she couldn't even really pull it forward or anything). I was gutted! But I made an appointment for 5 days later for another sweep and I started contracting the next day (Saturday), but I had a long early labour and my contractions starting on Saturday midday and gave birth on Wednesday 3.10am. Sorry, not sure that's what you will want to hear - but I guess ultimately it did help set off my labour and the fact it was long was just individual to me x

I had quite a few sweeps during my 4 days (!) induction (at 41+3 to 42+0), I was not dialated at all. sweeps, gel did not do anything apart from giving me pains I will never forget, ever... I ended up with a c-section after 4 days -failed induction- just to find out that my LO was breech. Thanks God I did not let them breaking my waters. A scan should have saved me from all of these pain , but for some reasons they don't like to do it. As much as I would love another baby, I am just absolutely petrified from the experience I had with my first one :S

My first sweep at 39+5 I was 1cm dilated and 25% effaced, and having very mild contractions and occasional green mucousy discharge. The sweep made me have some bloody show, and some stronger contractions, but that was it unfortunately.

A week later (40+5) I went for another sweep (2pm Wednesday), and was 2cm dilated (can't remember how effaced) and still having irregular mild contractions. I had another bloody show straight away afterwards, and contractions were stronger (like period pain and wind combined) and coming every 3-4 minutes lasting 30-40 seconds. This went on for a while.. I was 2-3cm at about 11.30pm Wednesday, I was 4-5cm at about 8pm Thursday, and I had her at 4am on the Friday morning.

I had sweep on wed was 2cm but cervix was posterior, went into labour on sun nite was due to be induced Mon. Good luck, hope u go soon x.
