    Hi,

I have been drinking ovaltine all through my pregnancy as you see it in all the pregnancy mags- good for you- vitamins etc etc..
It occurred to me last night to have a look at what vitamins it has-
    It has vitamin A...
Should I not be having this then?
Any advice? I feel bad now :(

I drink it quite regularly as well and never thought it was bad. I actually like the fact that it's got vitamins and goodies in it. Is Vitamin A supposed to be bad during pregnancy?

Mmm me too! I forgot it was in the bounty packs! I feel silly now!
Jessica- vit a is in liver/pate etc and I read we shouldn't have vit a in excess so I'm guessing pate has really high levels then?
Ovaltine doesn't seem to have much so I guess we're fine!
    Thanks everyone xxxx

sobe and vitamin water, as well as v8 smoothies and such have some flavors that are high in vit a too. It's ok to have some, just not in excess. I try to avoid anything with more than 20% daily value, and if it's higher than 15% I try not to have anything else in the same day with more than 15% I think my prenatal has like 30% so I just try to keep my vit a levels from packaged foods below 70% a day. They say that vit a from fruits and veggies doesn't affect the baby the same way so it's ok.

for those that don't know why it's bad: high levels of vit a can cause birth defects.

Vitamin A is okay depending on the type. I believe it's not recommended to have vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), but vitamin A beta carotene is oka. I find that interesting bc I purposefully didn't get the prenatal gummies cause they had the palmitate.

I think your good. You would have to take pretty high doses of vitamin A for it to cause harm. I believe the risk is mostly in the first trimester. We're talking in excess of 10,000 iu. And if your getting anywhere close to that your not doing through your diet alone.

Your right vitamins aquired through whole food/plants assimilates much better in the body vs man made supplements
