Parking on a street?

Hey girls :)

Does anyone know the rules for parking on a street? :dohh: I'll explain.

We live in a new estate, the house is around 8 years old now i think. We live right at the end, down a private drive in a large house. We have space for two cars outside our house. There are only four other houses at the end of the road, everyone else on the street is a modern flat. So there is visitor parking for each of the flats, which hardly anybody uses. Most people just park half on the pavement outside their houses which makes it very annoying turning into the street.

The other day we had a landscaper taking up our drive as we were having work done. I came home with Riley and shopping, and parked on the street at the end of our drive, behind another parked car. (there were roughly 5-6 parked around on the street as there usually is.)

A guy apparently came down the drive, and threatened our landscaper (obviously thinking he lived in our property) that he better move his 'effing' car from outside his house before it got keyed because he had the right to park outside his house, nobody else did and he should 'call the police'. :growlmad:

This guy has two parking spaces on his drive, and a garage.. Just as we do. And I was parked at the side of his house, so nowhere near blocking his driveway/blocking him from doing anything, I was just near his house!. There were cars parked near me on the pavement in the exact same way.

I wouldn't have been bothered if he was nice, and came down asking if we minded moving / that he couldn't get in his drive, but he was very rude and had two spaces on his driveway free.

So, how does it work? Does he have the right make people move/call the police, for being parked near his house if its not covering his driveway/is on the street? (No yellow/white lines). As far as i was aware, he doesn't own the street... and i wasnt blocking his drive, i was at the side of his house and was happily moving half an hour later when the landscaper left! :( I hate how rude some people can be. x

We had a similar problem when I parked my car on this 5 car parking space. I was told not to park there as it was "his" spot. We looked around and there was a sign saying not to park here if you do not rent with GWH (our landlord). so as we all rent with them I assumed I was allowed to park there so I called the landlord and he said that anyone can park there who rents with them and he has no right to tell me not to as there is no reserved sign and he hasn't specifically paid to have that spot. I don't think he can call the police on you unless there is signage, yellow lines or a reserved sign.

He can't do anything! What an idiot :dohh: As long as your not blocking an enterance/parking on yellow lines/reserved sign he cant do jack.

We live on an estate and all houses have drives, but ours is only long enough for 1 car so we park the other outside half on the road half on the pavement which leaves enough for a pram/kids on bikes etc.
I would never go knock a neighbours house demanding they move their car if they parked outside my house, even if my OH huffs and puffs that someone has 'nicked' his space :dohh:

Ha I'd of laughed in his face! He can do squat and I'd have happily told him that!

He sounds like a rotten piece of work, let him ring the police-a nice hefty fine for wasting police time might tame him!

he cant do anything!! xx

You pay road tax so you can park whereever u want, nobody owns the street outside of their house!

Nope, he can't do anything. Just because you own the house doesn't mean you own the road outside it!

No he can go jump lol... U can't park half on the pavement though as u can get a fine .... I'm a total moany smelly and I'm going to report my neighbours for parking half on half off cos its annoying as sin ! Kids ride their bikes on the street and its lame having cars blocking the way hahaha sorry I got off point ahaaha but yeah he can't say shit x

Putting my parking enforcer time to use again :)
Nope not a dam thing he can do as long as you are not parked across his drive or in a designated disabled bay that the council has painted for him then he can go jump.

Over things that can get you in trouble but not actually any of his business (only the council or sometimes the police can issue a complaint to you for these)
is if your parked across a lowered curb, yellow lines, a clearly marked no parking area, mounting the curb or in a residential disabled bay for someone other then him.

He can't do anything other than moan to you. White lines are for guidance and aren't enforceable so even if he pays the couple of hundred quid to get them outside his drive they aren't worth the paint they are done with it all honesty. The only thing he could potentially do is if you are parked half on the pavement he could call the councils parking enforcement and say you we're parked on the pavement, if they had a warden in the area they would go out and issue a ticket for blocking the highway, but that's it.

However, if he did key your car, he could get done for criminal damage so I would tell him to go for it! They would be able to get tiny fragments of paint from his key to prove it was him too.

You say you live down a private drive, but who does the road outside belong to? Is it a public highway (i.e. maintained by the local council) or is it private land (i.e. owned by an individual or a group of individuals) - either way he's being a nob, I'm just wondering if the private drive part of your OP has any bearing on it? I know that in a minor amount of cases, some houses on privately owned roads are deemed to also include part of the path/road outside the house too?

The rest of the road is public, and has mainly flats on it. There are 4-5 expensive 5 bed houses at the end that are separate and have drives off of the road. He doesn't, his hous opens onto a local road rather than private land x

Ah right. He's just being a d*ck then! As long as a vehicle has tax and insurance, it can park anywhere on the public highway (the obvious Highway Code parking restrictions aside, double yellows etc.)

Unless it is a private road (and you have said it isn't) then you pay your road tax so you can park on the road.
If it was specified numbered bays or yellow lines then you couldn't park there.
He is what is known as 'A parking nazi'!!

However, we once parked our car round the corner as all the spaces in front of our house had been taken by a neighbours party guests.
The following morning, we discovered some twat from one of the flats round the corner had thrown paint all over the front of our car. It was only parked there for one night, and it wasn't even habitual!!
The police couldn't do anything about it because we don't know who did it (although they said they had a pretty good idea nad would call on him to 'make enquiries' (IE: try and scare the shit out of him!!)

Omg binxy that's awful. Some people really need a slap

Knew I had a pic of it somewhere.
Luckily, the chavvy little shitweasle used emulsion so we were able to clean it off (and it is our crappy old car). If he had used gloss, it would have been permanent.

Our other neighbours were disgusted that this had happened and vowed very loudly when the likely suspect walked past us with his dog when we were cleaning the car, that they would do all they can to catch the ******* and shop him to the police.
The bloke we thought it was, was the ONLY neighbour not to come outside to ask what had happened and to express his disbelief!!!
He became a bit of a social pariah after that!!

Who in their right mind thinks that's a good thing to do?!

He can't do anything Hun and binxy omg that's jut awful

Thank god the dimwit used emulsion paint! Fool!

How anyone can do that and live with themselves is beyond me. Glad you & neighbours managed to single him out & give him some discreet grief.
