I buy parmesan cheese quite often, but shopped some where different this week and bought it there. I did notice on the packet it said not suitable for pregnant women because it was made with unpasteurised milk. I've never really noticed this on the other cheese I use to buy from the other supermarket. I went into the supermarket I normally shop at and looked at the parmesan cheese i normally buy and must to my surprise it says the same thing. Do you think it's okay to eat? I've been eating it without really knowing or even realising. Can it hurt my baby?

I don't think it can hurt the baby, it's just that we are more at risk from bugs from unpasteurised milk that have the potential to be harmful if you were really really unlucky. I wouldn't worry :flower:

I wouldn't worry, but try and keep an eye out for dried cheese that has been pasteurised x

I never realised this either and I've been eating it too, haven't had any side effects so I'm not too worried but glad i know now!

i think its because we're at higher risk of listeria poisoning... and u'd know if u'd had that! so i think ur okay :)

i read that although it is made with unpasteurised milk, the cheese is too hard to harbour the harmful bacteria. i've been eating it weekly, though used in a recipe, so i would hope all the bacteria would be killed in the oven anyway! x

How odd, that one is always bandied around as being a hard cheese and therefore suitable for us. I think most of the food rules only really apply inthe 1st trim though don't they?

God help anyone one of you who takes my runny eggs away from me! lol

are you eating runny eggs?? i've been dying to eat one and they say you cant. Also... i find it so hard to not lick the cake batter when making a cake and Ive been wanting to do that too.

Parmesan cheese is fine. Hard cheeses that made with unpasturised milk are fine as they have been matured for over 4 months and any harmful bacteria has died off. Soft cheeses are more risky as they tend to be eaten 3-6 weeks after they are made so are the potencial harmful bacteria could still be present.

I used to be a cheesemonger so had to advise pregnant woman daily.

Ive been having it as its a hard cheese.

Soft eggs are fine too as long as you get the lion stamped ones

interesting! I have never followed all the food rules. Still eat my eggs runny. I eat parm cheese. I made brownies the other day and licked the spoon! I also eat lunchmeat. The only rule i follow is the tuna fish and other fish rules. I havent eaten tuna fish in a few years because of mercury scares

i think the tuna is only if you eat tons of canned tuna-my mw said no more than one can a week because large fish can have mercury deposits and that is one of the links to autism...so i have stayed away- not that i liked tuna too much to begin with
