Someone has just mentioned in another thread that to get SPP it's similar guidelines to SMP in that the employee only has to have worked for 26 weeks before the 15th week before due date. Which my OH has done, but he hasn't been in a year which for some reason I thought was the minimum (he started November 2009, I'm due in a couple weeks).

When I rang welfare they completely fobbed me off and said he wasn't entitled to anything, and told me they didn't even have to let him go to the labour if they 'didn't want to' (yes she was very rude). Thankfully his sargeant is much nicer than that and will be letting him be there for the labour and will probs let him have a few days at home MAX. Which I am TOTALLY grateful for (him being at the labour is my priority!!!) But is he supposed to be entitled to a week off (at SPP)? Or can the military get away with doing things differently???? (Just curious really, I'll take what I can get and tbh as he's in training he needs to get back to camp asap to get it done) x

Im not 100% sure as i really dont understand the entitlements but id say the military can pretty much do wht they want, as they always do. My hubs has started PDT this month and is away when baby is born but with me being induced they will fly him back however he wont be getting his 2 weeks paternity, from what i can tell he'll be with me whilst in hospital then once baby and I are home, he'll be back to course or exercise. sucks
x

Aww that sucks hun, so annoying how they get away with doing what they want :( at least they can be there for the birth I suppose xxx

my friends hubby is in the navy shes got quite upset as her hubby is being alowed to the birth and 2 days off then thats it hes back out again hes only allowed to be there cause his sargeant said luckily hes got leave about 3 weeks later so shes trying to console herself with that hes been in the navy 7 years too x

My husband is army and the regiment we are attached to has been brilliant, he has been allowed time off for all my appointments and has been told then when I go into labour thats when his pat leave starts. I think sometimes they can say if its your first they don't have to technically let you have the 2 weeks but your 2nd you get the full 2 weeks for, depends also on whether they are on tour and can get back!!

awwww hun that's rubbish, I'm not really sure what he's entitled to but my hubby is in the RAF (just over 2 years now) and is allowed 2 weeks paternity leave at which he says is his normal pay. He is also being allowed to take 2 weeks of his own leave so he has 4 weeks off in total. His flight sargeant and corporals have been great, allowing him to come to midwife appointments, scans etc. It's a shame they are not more supportive of your hubby :(

But I guess my suggestion would be for your hubby to book his own leave off to have time at home with you and baby xxx

I only know about the US Army.. Ladies get 42 days of maternity leave.. Men in the Army get 10 days of maternity no matter if their spouse is active duty or a dependent.

I hope they let him off.. That's so cruel!

Wow, all i know about is the Canadian army, my husbands regiment has been amazing, he's been to every appointment, I had 4 last week and once I go into labour that's when his leave starts and he gets 5 1/2 months off.

Thanks everyone. I think it's a bit diff atm coz he's still in training (has been for 10 months coz he's been injured) so he's under much stricter conditions than he normally would be. He can't book any leave off for this reason- the only time he has off are some weekends (not this one :( ) and then christmas leave- until he's passed out anyway. We were hoping he would have passed out before baby was here :( bt as he's still in 'rehab' it's easy for him to come home, if he was in main training there's a chance he couldn't be home for the birth! 42 days for women in the US military seems like nothing :/ x

It does seem to depend where they are and what they are doing.

My husband hasn't been in long enough to be entitled to SPP (unless they take in to consideration his previous service time with the Navy) but he is being given 2 weeks full paid leave. He has told them the date I am due to be induced if baby hasn't arrived before then so they know the latest his leave will start. Luckily though he is only 1 and 1/2 hrs away and he is currently shore based so it is easier. If he was away at sea it would have been a completely different scenario.

my hubby is raf and he is having his 2 eeks paternity plus however much other leave he wants to have . his sqn have been brilaint , they moved his deployemtn date as he was due away at time of birth . hes has now been and is home again , and he has been allowed out of work for all appoitments relating to the baby xx
