Hi all,

I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS, and being an accountant (therefore liking numbers) and a capricorn (always assessing worse case senerio) I was wondering if anyone on here knew what the chances of concieving naturally or with help are?
I know this is a tricky question and that PCOS effects people differently. I am 29 with a BMI of 25 surely my chances of becoming a Mummy one day are pretty good? 90% of people concieve within 18 months of trying, do i still fall into that category?

I have PCOS and i have been tyring now for 4 year, had the op on 25th, no bfp yet. sorry i have no good news, dont loose faith

I cannot give you statistics on how likely it is that you will conceive, but I can tell you that I have done a lot of research and a proper diet and exercise seem to be helpful in incresasing your chances.

Good luck!

From what I have read just because you have PCOS does not mean you are completely infertile. It may make it harder for you to get pregnant, especially the older you get, and there is a higher risk of miscarriage, but all is not lost. Healthy diet, exercise, and de-toxing your life are great boosters to help. Plenty of women with PCOS go on to have loads of children both naturally and through other medical means.

I myself am planning on trying reflexology to help boost my fertility, along with improving my eating habits, and exercising more. A book that has really helped me to understand my PCOS better is "The Ultimate PCOS Handbook:Lose weight, boost fertility, clear skin, and restore self esteem" by Colette Harris and Theresa Cheung. For me it was definitely worth the tenner on amazon as it really helped explain what PCOS meant to me. At any rate when it comes to PCOS I've found that your best bet is doing the research yourself as unless a doctor specializes on the condition they really don't know much about it. Best wishes!! :D

I couldn't give you exact numbers but it all depends. There are a lot of people that get prego right away with the help of metformin and clomid. A friend of mine was on metformin for about a year and she was given clomid 17 weeks ago. Now she is expecting her first baby. This was her second round of clomid. I've done two cycles and haven't been lucky! So everyone is different. Are you seeing a specialist?

As above posters have said it's hard to give figures as pcos affects people in different ways. My consultant told me that you can hace pcos but not have polycstic ovaries and you can also have polycystic ovaries but not actually have the syndrome! weird or what. I was only diagnosed last month!
The book mentioned above sounds good-will have to check it out!
Lots of celebs with children have pcos-victoria beckham for example and she has 4 children now!-though she may have had help??
GL!x

I too have PCOS, TTC for nearly 3 years, had 6 cycles of clomid and currently on Metformin and not had a single :BFP: I know people who have PCOS have had babies so I know it can happen but we have to remeber that we are all different. I know it's hard to do but keep going and hopefully you get your end result :)

Thanks for your replys yes am seeing a specialist, have only recently found out and have only had my first consultation am now waiting for more test and go back in 3 months time to discuss my options.

i got told i had pcos beginin of this year , we'd been tryin a year in sept i finally got my appointment at a pcos clinic a 51 day waitin list cut a long story short i got ill so didnt do any of my trackin no opks and i got my bfp we only did it once that month so im v v lucky its still early days but im full of hope , neva give up hope it will happen x

Thanks Kelz,

I'm trying super hard not to stress this cycle and your post have just made me feel very positive. I think i ovulated this month so fingers crossed it'll be my turn soon.

yw ,i think thats wot helped me not stressing over my opks i neva got a v strong positive on them so always thought the worst , lookin bak i was puttin so much preassure on myself and oh so that couldnt of helped either

Hi,

First month trying I became pregnant (sadly miscarried) and at the time I didn't know I had pcos. I was 28 at the time and too had a good bmi.

After mc my cycles went crazy (more so than normal) and I was told I have pcos.

Third cycle after mc I became pregnant again, I was 29 and still had a good bmi

I was never on prescribed drugs either. The cycle I became pregnant was the cycle I chose to give soy a try and now have have my beautiful baby girl.

So, that must be pretty good odds on becoming pregnant?!

Hello love do you chart your temperature? I have pcos and it did help me understand what was going on with my body and whether or not I was ovulating. Sites like fertility friend make it nice and easy.

And the only stat I've been told is that clomid gets 70% women ovulating....and I reckon once you're ovulating you've got as much chance as everyone else of being in the 90% getting preg in the first year (assuming no other probs). I'm starting my 2nd cycle of clomid in a couple of days so fingers crossed!!

Good luck! xx

I have PCOS & am currently expecting my third child. From my own experience, I would say weight (caused by insulin resistance) is a MAJOR factor in infertility. I recently lost 2 stone & prior to this weight loss was not ovulating. Incidentally, just before I fell pregnant with DS1 I lost 2 stone. If you are overweight your ovaries are exposed to higher levels of progesterone, stopping them from releasing any eggs (although your periods still happen, etc.). My BMI went from 30+ in recent years to 28 just before I conceived. HTH :flower:

Hi Justwantababy,

Yep i am charting, and it does help but sometimes i do find myself getting wound up, thinking surely i must o soon! My cycles are more regular since i've lost weight and have been exercising which is good. Just desperate to get my BFP :)

Hi Suzzle,

I have a BMI of 25 (i lost 21 pounds just before i started TTC and have kept it off), i'm 5'4" and 10 stone 10 and a healthy size 12. The doctor said it wouldnt hurt to lose another stone! Does he know how difficult it was to get it off in the first place and maintain it??!!

Hey Natashaa1, I wasn't TTC this time, or any time tbh. DS1 was post weightloss & I fell pregnant with DS2 when he was only 8 months. Those 2 babies were 'natural' i.e. no meds, etc. This time I was on metformin for weight, skin & cycle issues caused by PCOS. I was on it for over a year before I started to ovulate. Ovulation only occurred when I went from being 13st to 11st. My goal was 10st7, but a round 10 would be nice :) I had actually started taking anti-depressants (had a tough couple of years) and a side effect was weightloss. In short - I think it was the weightloss not the metformin that led to this LO (well that's not ALL ) Keep positive :D My ideal weight is meant to be 9lb4 or something according to NHS, etc. for my height (5'2) but I know I'd half kill myself trying to get there & never be able to maintain so I chose a happy medium. Do what makes you happy & what you think you can reasonably achieve :hugs:

I have pcos ang I have a 4 years old daughter. I got Metformin and vitamins, healthly eating and little bit of exercise achieving 3 pregnancies in a year!! Doctors told us that there is no way with pcos and low sperm count/motility to happen and we needed IVF. We tried ourselves and we did it!! Keep trying it will happen believe me!! Get some ovulation kit ,watch your diet, vitamins and Metformin IF YOUR DOCTOR belives that you need them. Lots and lots of baby dust to you!!!

I was just told that I have polycystic ovaries today. Not sure if that means I have PCOS or just polycystic ovaries. I am not overweight and I don't have irregular cycles so maybe I just have polycystic ovaries. But I am now pregnant first month of unprotected sex. So it can happen! Now I am just hoping I can make it past the first trimester.
