After many visits to my OB and regular doctor and had to get a new doctor and they have finally said I have PCOS and have to be on metformin.... I am on 500mg for once a day in the morning... For the ladies on Metformin what exactly does it do? Will I get a period again? And how long does it take to get a period if it does?? Can you get pregnant on metformin, once the periods starts?? Soo many questions sorry..

You can read about what it does here.

However, it doesn't work the same for everyone. Some women respond better than others and you have to find the right dosage for you. I have PCOS and only was having about 2 periods a year and wasn't ovulating. I started 500mg of Metformin on January 30th this year. A week later, I went up to 1000mg and then at the end of February, I went up to 1500mg. It has been great for me. Since January, I have lost about 15-20 pounds. I get full faster and feel alot more normal as far as eating goes. Some women don't get their period with just Metformin but I thankfully did. I got my period 53 days after I started Metformin and ovulated on day 42. It's the first time I had ovulated on my own in about 5 years. Getting pregnant on Metformin all depends on if you ovulate or not. You can get your period but not ovulate. If it brings on ovulation for you, then yes you can get pregnant. Some other things you may want to look into and ask your doctor about is Femara and Clomid to bring on ovulation.

I will warn you though that until your body adjusts, the side effects are awful. I was having to run to the bathroom all day. After a week or two though, it's fine. But again, everyone reacts differently.

I haven't had a period since Jan 18th, so that is why I was put on Metformin... And I guess I'm not ovulating at all, my eggs aren't maturing, just disappearing I guess he put it as... Just would love to know how long this has been going on cause I haven't been able to get pregnant for 3 years, and had problems with periods before.. Had to move to a new town just to get this result.. Just wish doctors would care for other people like they do there family.. Alot of trying and HPT's wasted.. Just want that baby girl we have been dying for! Not looking forward to the side effects, don't mind the weight loss.. Already working on that with Plexus Slim, and that is doing awesome.. But thank you for the link.. I'll take all the info about this I can get...

Omg... First day on metformin was hell... I'm scared to take a second dose... I think o had every side effect! I had nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, dizzy, sensitive to light, and running to the bathroom every 5 minutes! I'm not hungry or want anything to drink, and if I do it doesn't sit well in my stomach.... How long does this last for? Please help!

How did they officially diagnose you with PCOS? was it simply due to the fact that you haven't had a period?

Sorry im just really curious as I have CRAZY cycles and they have thought this might be something I have as well but no positive way to diagnose?

thanks!

@Jenn - It might be different for you but when I first started and every time I upped my dosage, the side effects lasted 1-2 weeks. My body was pretty adjusted after a week or two and most of the side effects are gone now. Sometimes I have a bad day where I'm running to the bathroom alot or if I eat something that doesn't agree with the Metformin. It's definitely not nearly as bad though. I would try taking it right before bed though and see if it helps. I started doing that when I was upped to 1500mg and had barely any side effects. I've stuck to doing that now and it's so much better. Hang in there :)

@littlegirl87 - My doctor said she was 95% sure I had PCOS based on symptoms alone but it was confirmed via blood work. I also had an ultrasound to check for cysts on my ovaries. Thankfully my ovaries are pretty good for having PCOS.

I have type one Diabetes so my doctor says that a lot of times they lump that with PCOS. I do have some symptoms, but I have never fully missed a period since being off BC for a year. My mom has endometriosis so doctor says some of my signs could also be from that....who knows

either way it makes TTC a pain

Good luck to you!:hugs:

They did some blood work on me for my hormone levels and it came back that my Prolactin was high and then I have some characteristic's of PCOS.. Here is what I found on WebMD:

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Directory
PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a common hormonal disorder in women that with interferes with the growth and release of eggs from the ovaries, or ovulation. It is the most common cause of infertility among women. PCOS occurs when a woman's body overproduces sex hormones, called androgens. The hormone imbalance prevents fluid-filled sacs in the ovaries from breaking open and releasing mature eggs. The fluid-filled sacs bunch together, causing many tiny cysts. Symptoms of PCOS include missed periods, abnormal facial and body hair growth, acne, and weight gain. PCOS may run in families.

If you have two of these problems then you have PCOS.. In my case I have all of them.. Which really sucks.. And it took them 3 years to finally say I have this.. You just gotta find the right doctor that will listen to you and take you serious.. I went through 4 towns and when I got to the town I'm in now, I went through 5 doctors.. Then yesterday I went to this new doctor and he took me serious and talked to my OB for hours and they finally came to a plan for me... They wanted me to keep traveling to my OB and specialist out of town and I just don't have the money for that... My regular doctor was just giving me the run around and wasn't answering my questions, so I seen someone new and he answered my questions and took the time to expain everything to me and now he is my primary doctor.. But I hope you find out what is going on with you and just bring it up to your doctor if you think this is what you have, go with your gut feeling... Good Luck.. And just a note metformin is the pill I'm on just once a day at 500mg and wow does it have side effects.. But then every pill does, and my body just has to get used to it I guess..

Ohh Shilo, the side effects are horrible.. I took my first pill yesterday around 3 and by 4 I was running to the bathroom, and I was unable to eat, then I got very lightheaded, and dizzy, then I had to go into a dark room cause I was unable to be around light of any sort.. Then later that night I was getting bad pain in my stomach to pelvis and would go to my back.. It is like every side effect kicked in within hours.. And I just took my second dose today, and I'm back to being unable to eat or drink.. My doctor doesn't come back from vacation till next Thursday, so I'm just gonna wait it out to see if it gets better.. If I didn't have my muscle relaxers I would've been up all night or in the ER.. Have you had any problems with your stomach or anything like that? I had to cuddle up to my fiance and have him hold me till the muscle relaxers, it was bad.. We normally don't cuddle cause either I'm keeping him up with my snoring or he is waking me up for his snoring... LOL

It can be really bad. It all sounds normal for Metformin side effects. I promise it gets better. Everyone I know who takes Metformin hardly gets side effects anymore. It just takes a few weeks for your body to adjust. Try taking it before bed on a night where you don't have to do anything the next day instead of during the day. That way worst case scenario and you are up all night sick, you don't have anywhere to be the next day. Best case scenario is that you get no side effects. Switching to taking it literally right before bed instead of when I wake up made a world of difference as far as side effects.

I started Metformin on January 30th and then a week later, I had pizza for dinner on my birthday. My stomach and insides hurt so bad I felt like I was dying lol. It passes though.

I have also seen some people say there's an extended release version of Metformin that alot of people switch to if their side effects don't get better. It's supposedly alot easier on the body. Maybe ask your doctor about that?

I can't see my doctor till next Thursday I'm gonna see him, if my side effects don't get any better.. I'm gonna tough it out and try it at night, only bad thing is I homeschool my son, so I'll be home.. Teaching is gonna be hard.. It just gets scary no being able to eat or drink.. Cause I'm not hungry or thristy at all... And then ever since I started it yesterday, today I have been getting a funny feeling when I pee.. Sorry TMI, I know.. Is this normal or is it just me?

I haven't had any weird feelings as far as peeing. At first, I didn't wanna eat but as time went on, it actually made me REALLY hungry. I assume because my metabolism starting working right and was burning fat faster than I was used to. However, alot of people I know feel like you and have barely any appetite. It seems to go one way or the other.

There's forums called soulcysters that's all about PCOS. You should sign up and look around there a bit. There's a ton of resources & info and you'll have a wider audience to answer any questions you have since everyone there has PCOS and most are on Metformin.

Thank you soo much.. It feels like something is falling out of me, it gets very heavy and the strangest feeling in the world.. I hope it passes, cause I don't want to feel that again... I want all these things to pass, so I can feel normal again.. But the pain in the stomach hurts the worst, just can't wait for the hubby to come home to take care of my son.. So I can take my muscle relaxer to be comfortable again... Just hope this week an half goes fast, so I can see if I can just get on Provera & Clomid.. I was on Metformin about 3 years ago to lose weight and it gave me bad stomach problems, and I'm scared to go down that road again.. And no doctor will switch the pills to something else, has to be the doctor I'm working with for this problem..But thank you for all the advice and help...
