hi all,
just a quick question about pineapple juice?
is it safe?
ive been drinking a full carton at least every 2-3 days but someone told me today at the supermarket that if it is for me i shouldnt be drinking too much...
is what im drinking too much?
if so why??

also, is it allowed to post 12 week scans and bump pictures in here to have fun gender guesses? i really want peoples opinions!!!

thanks in advance for any replies x

I was told by my dr that the enzymes (?) in pineapple juice - fresh and otherwise- can actually cause miscarriage, so I've been avoiding completely!
Its best to just ask a healthcare professional.

And yes please do post the pics, I'll take a guess!

omg really? i feel so guilty now! definitely wont be finishing this carton off!!
i annoy myself sometimes i wish id asked before allowing myself to even have any, i usally ask first if i want something and am unsure! :(

thanks, will upload pics shortly :) x

OMG! I've been eating loads of pineapple! jeez it feels like you have to check everything's ok to eat when pregnant! had no idea pineapple might be a problem! :-( x

its scary isnt it hun, i had a little doubt due to people saying to eat pineapple when overdue to soften the cervix and bring on labour, but i guessed that wouldnt happen unless i were actually term... it appears my gut instinct was right... i think i need to hire a pregnancy trained chef to hand deliver everything i eat and drink, just to be sure haha x

The reason some people say that you should avoid pineapple is because it can cause contractions however you would have to have a very large quantity for this to be an issue. To go as far as to say eating pineapple will cause MC/early labour would be inaccurate though. So small amounts are safe but large amounts are in question, which means there is no solid proof to say large amounts are or are not safe so it might be better to play the 'better safe than sorry' route and stick to only small portions 'just in case'.

I had heard that pineapple could cause m/c, but when i asked my OB he nearly laughed at me. He told me it was okay to eat and to stay off google. LOL Guess doctors can't even agree! I've been eating it bc I love it, but I don't eat huge amounts.

And yes, post your pics!!

To date there are no data or scientific studies that prove the content of compounds in pineapple fruit can cause miscarriage. One of the compounds contained in pineapple is bromelain. These compounds can soften the meat. Perhaps the content of this compound which is feared may soften the uterine wall so that the foetus is at risk regardless and there was a miscarriage. Actual content of the compound bromelain in pineapple is very small so it will not directly result in miscarriage.

Consumption shouldn't be excessive however it's likely what you've been having is absolutely fine, and if you like it - then continue.

I personally think anything in moderation is ok. Lots of things can be bad for you/baby if you have too much of them. I was told to stay away from soft cheese altogether, but then found out it's only the fresh soft cheese to avoid and the pasteurised kind is fine. There are loads of scare stories out there about almost everything! you can pretty much type "is [insert any food item] safe to eat in pregnancy" into Google and lots of websites will pop up, some saying it's perfectly fine and others saying it's awful to have. I think in moderation pineapple is fine :) just the same as the odd cup of coffee or tea isn't going to do any harm. Just do what you feel is best for you :)

Agree with this. Also looked into it when overdue with my second eldest a few years ago and from what I remember while bromelain is a natural prostaglandin not all prostaglandins ripen/soften the cervix and from what I read bromelain is one of the types that doesn't or at the very least there is no proof that it does. Also it's only the very fresh pineapple that is theorised to have that effect, juice or canned pineapple is processed to the extent that it would have no such effect, should the theory be correct. Apparently you'd have to eat 20+ whole ripe fresh pineapples to ingest a tangible amount of Bromelain as well xx

Wow "/ Maybe it's time I changed my doctor! I really love fresh pineapple, but was told to avoid it.
Unbelievable.
If you can't trust your health professional to give accurate advice, who can you trust?!
