 well this morning i woke up with a thought in my mind, now they say that you shouldn't go out within 2 weeks of birth (not sure if this is still true or something the old ones tell me to stop me having control of my own life!!) but I don't know what size of nursing bra I will need, how can i go and get measured and buy if i am not supposed to go out. Do you think that if i go 25 mins to M&S, get sorted and come straight home that would be ok (not drive myself) oh goodness me, the things I worry about! :dohh: xxxxxxxxxxx

I'm wondering the same. I really don't want to have to go out and get measured a few days after giving birth. But then again, I don't want to guess at my size before my milk comes in as can't afford to mess around with buying the wrong size and then would need to take it back and swap them anyway.

I went out the night before I had my first. I went out to a hen party, with a bunch of loud music and dancing. It was fun and I enjoyed myself, and I don't see why they dont want you going out in the 2 weeks before your due date. I say do whatever you feel comfortable with, and sod that silly advice. Of course, I will tell you I went without a bra for the first couple of weeks unless I was going out of the house. When your milk comes in, its a little uncomfortable to wear something restricting, so I just went without. I never got an official nursing bra until LO was 2 months old or so, which is when I didn't have as much fluctuation with size throughout the day.

I've never heard that you shouldn't go out within 2 weeks of birth.

I've heard of people with slightly premature babies being advised to keep them in (and sheltered from pollution) etc for a week or so but that's it.

Even if the midwife advised to keep LO indoors I'm sure you could pop out quickly in the first week and leave them with your OH? As long as you time it if you're breastfeeding to run out straight after a feed?

I fully intend to be going out within a day or two of LO coming home (if all is ok!) - on team yellow so want to take LO out for a quick dander to our local Next (less than a mile away) to pick out some pink/blue clothes!

Btw i understood it was recommended to get fitted for a nursing bra at 36-38 weeks anyway? I have one that spans a few sizes and I plan on going at 36 weeks to get some more. Got it from Bavado - they have a great guide on their website for how your breasts change during pregnancy and when your milk comes in so you could base the size on that (and buy a few different sizes and keep the tags on and send OH out to return if not right? Think M&S have a long returns period).

why don't u measure urself now, and get carriwell nursing bra's...they r soo comfortable. the mat ones are anyway...but cos they were so good i got their nursing bra's too, as the cup size is not fixed, it accomodates for up to 2 cup sizes more than ur normal size, which is good 4 wen milk comes in... and provides really good support. thats hw i got out of the nursing bra dilemma..lol x

I'm still wearing bikini tops lol, all the nursing bras i have see in stores look so uncomfy and fuddy duddy. I was gonna wait to see when this milk starts leaking and go then. :)

thanks everyone...good advice I will check out those companies. I am glad I am not the only one that wan'ts to go out within a couple of days I am sure it can't do any harm as long as LO is all healthy. xxxx

You can get measured now for a nursing bra. Last time I went to a boutique that sold Hot Milk bras, got measured and then was naughty and bought them cheaper online. Hot Milk and Elle MacPherson are sooo comfty, plus mine are still in good shape so I can wear them again this time.

Personally I found mothercare bras rubbish, zero support (and I'm not that big) and then they lose shape quickly.

For around the house and in the early days when your boobs are changing so much I would really recommend a crossover style sleep bra. Gap sell one by Medela and Jojomamanbebe sell two for £15. I have the Gap one and it was fantastic but looking a little worse for wear, just bought the jojo ones so we'll see how they go.

I swear that having a good bra in pregnancy and after is essential to keeping your boobs in shape :)

according to the nct you can get fitted for one from 36 weeks which is what im going to do so then im sorted and wont need to go out again x

i had my bras from bravissimo first time around but dug them out and they're too small this time around. bravissimo's great if you're D+ cup and they do next day delivery online if you don't fancy going out, you should be able to order online from most places,as above poster commented i'd steer clear of mothercare feeding bra's, i found they gave me no support at all and ended up binning them! x

I have just ordered a couple of ones off the matalan website 2 for £10 should get me through the first couple of weeks round the house :)

I had my NCT breastfeeding class yesterday and she said getting fitted at 36 weeks was fine - if you dont want to get fitted/want to do it yourself she said to make sure you buy one that does up on the loosest fitting (last clasp and feels tight) as your ribs tend to shrink back an inch or two post birth so you will move up the clasps as you shrink back:)
She also said you should be able to judge suitability by if you can fit the palm of your hand in the cup (as this is the standard size you will expand by) - and not to forget the size of a breast pad (if you are using them).
Hope it helps!

I've nursed 5 already and I'll give you a little tip. Buy one cup size larger, and yes stuff a pad in there with your hand to see if there is a little room, get like 2 or 3 of those. THEN when you are feeling up to it, milk has come in, and things have settled, go for a fitting.

Another tip, buy your bras a couple weeks before delivery, break them in so they stretch a little bit more. A brand new bra not broken in when your engorged isn't exactly the most comfortable thing!

I got mine from M&S 2 of weeks ago and they knew I was been fitted for a nursing bra so of course citted me with one that is comfy but still has room for when the milk comes. They are properly trained for nursing bras.

I've started wearing my bra's already to get used to them and breaking them in so to speak.

i bought my maternity bras from m and s they are awful way too big and they are always sliding about the woman i got didnt seem to know what she was doing at all !! however i think that was just her |!!!
im hoping my local bra shop fits them as i live in a town and theres only 1 bra shop if they dont im going to have to go out of town at 36 weeks which i really dont want to do !
