I have a glucose test for Gestational diabetes booked in on wednesday 24th march, as my fundal measurements were 36cm at 32 weeks, and now 38cm at 34 weeks. I had a growth scan on friday, and my AFI (amniotic fluid index) is 24cm at 34 weeks.... so I have polyhydramnios. My baby is also measuring big for dates too. EFW: 3206g @ 34 weeks (7.1lb). FL: 72.0mm, HC: 338.0mm, AC: 336.0mm

I am so scared, i know i shouldnt have, but I googled this, and now i am petrified of there being something terrible wrong with the baby.... kidney problems, downs etc etc....

can anyone offer any reassurance? this is my first baby so i have no previous pregnancy experiuence, this is making my life a misery at the moment.... I cant stop worrying about this.....

Hi hun, I have just been diagnosed with gd myself, I picked up my testing kit 2 weeks ago and have been back and forth the hospital every week to see drs and have growth scans.....I think its very rare now that there are any of these sort of problems with bubs, I tried to google about gd once before, but I seen some things that were not nice, I decided I wasnt going to google anymore and stay away from it, if I needed to know anything I would either ask here or ask my dr when I seen them......I also have a baby measuring big for dates, my fundal height is 3 weeks ahead, the babys leg is 2 weeks ahead and the belly is 4 weeks ahead......Dont panic about it hun, I am still worrying myself over seeing my dr tomorrow and if they are going to put me on insulin or not......Just wait till you see your dr and see what they say of speak to your mw......There are a few other ladies on here who have also given me lots of support, Im sure they can help put your mind at ease also.....Hugs.....

thanks shady... its just so hard not to worry, you want everything to be perfect.... im going to stop googling now (my partner is going mad that its just upsetting me), and wait till i get the results of the GD test.... ive got an appointment with the obstetrician on thursday, so am going to take loads of questions with me....

thanks for your support, when are you due?

Hiya hun,
Im measuring 43!!! Had an emergency GTT and I dont have GD, but I have very low fluid round my baby so it looks like hes just a big boy!! Dont assume the worst hun...you could just have a big baby. Ive got a growth scan on Wed to see HOW big my little man is. Hope it goes ok for you xxx

Hi hun

I was diagnosed with borderline GD and excess fluid.. my doc said excess fluid can definitely be caused by GD and sugar.. try not to worry.. i am sure you had a 20 week growth scan where they would have checked everything.. my doc also said that 50% of cases with excess fluid has no known cause.. :hugs:

ok i had polyhrdramios with my 2nd and 4th babies, pls dont worry, my 2nd came as 37 weeks and weighed 10lb 1oz, my 4th came at 38weeks and weighed 9lb 10oz, i tested negative for gd with them, there were no kidney problems or downs and they will really look closely at baby at the scans etc any worries they would have told you. when i had my son we couldnt google things and looking back now thankgod, it just means you have a lot of water, and a big baby, my water was on the large side this time and this baby was weighing over 4lb at 30 weeks, its something i think you are prone too. expect to laboura little earlier such as 37 to 38 weeks, expect a flood when your waters go or they bnreak them at the hospital, but apart from that pls dont worry xxxx

Well, I had my glucose tests done today... in hospital at 9am, after fasting from last night, blood taken at 9:30am, given a disqusting, sickly, warm lemon drink that i had to down in 5 minutes, wait for 2hrs, then pricked with needles again !
Back tomorrow afternoon for results, and next steps, so fingers crossed : )

Also had a really good chat with another midwife, who explained things in more detail for me.... baby has always been a biggun, 24cms is not poly (cut off is 24.8), its just that the cut off is 20cm for the diabetes test.... no problems reported with babies stomach so swallowing etc should be fine too.... just a big baby : )

Wish me luck !! Will report back tomorrow x x

Hi ladies,

Just to keep you informed, if you were curious, I have had my results back from my GTT tests today and I have tested positive for Gestational Diabetes. In a funny way, I am kind of relieved. I now know why the baby is big, and I have too much water, so no more tests and worries as to what is going on, and if there is anything wrong with the baby.

I have to go back to the hospital tomorrow, to discuss next steps with the diabetes midwife, diet changes, checking my blood sugar levels etc.... I will have another growth scan in 2 weeks time, and have been told I will be induced between 38-39 weeks.

Has anyone else been diagnosed? It would be nice to speak to people in the same boat, and share experiences.

Lucy x x x x
