I am 20 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins and I'm constantly worrying about preterm labour. My husband has just told me he needs to go away for a night when I'm 32 weeks and this has just made me worse.

I know 37 weeks is the average gestation for twins but do many women get near to this? What are the chances of going into labour at 32 weeks or earlier?

Thanks ladies, I'm something of a worrier!!! X

From the research i did 50% will deliver after 36 weeks of the remaining 50 percent many will be born week 36. As a rule of thumb most sites say to be ready for delivery earlier with twins. My MFM considers 36 weeks full term for twins. I'm sure your doctor will watch you carefully and you will know if there is a high chance of going into labor when your husband is going to be gone. I am surprised how many need to be induced (usually between 36 and 37 weeks)

i was worried about it from the beginning.. i had a leep a few years ago (part of my cervix removed) which on its own increases the risk. i am now 36 and 6 and want them out =) more cause my folks have been here for about a month already and are getting anxious... ive stayed totally active (no bed rest) worked til nearly 35 weeks. worked out (lifting) til 30 weeks or so. walk up and down my stairs, carry heavy stuff etc. it is something to keep in the back of your mind but i wouldnt let it stress you out too badly... as far as hubby going away for 1 night.. i probably wouldnt worry too much about that either, while crappy things happen sometimes, the odds are against it. oh and my ob will induce me at 38 and 5

Thanks ladies!

drsquid, its great hearing stories like yours! I really hope I am as fit as you when I get to that stage and would love to be able to carry them as long as that. I think when you look on the internet for reassurance sometimes all you find is the horror stories!! I have been well in my pregnancy so far and im hoping that it will continue!!

This is what my OB said to me and I tried to listen to it and it did help. "Don't even start thinking about preterm labor until after 25-26 weeks or you will drive yourself crazy!". For the most part I didn't worry about it, I did get a lot of stuff prepared early but that just in my normal nature to want things ready. Now I will be honest that for me since almost exactly 26 weeks I have had to go to the hospital 3 times for frequent braxton hicks but once they stopped completely on their own before I even got to the hospital and the other two times they stopped them with medication and I've been sent home. My OB is still confident we can make it to 32 weeks, which yes would be early but is a huge milestone. Our goal is still 35 weeks but one of my babies has slow placenta blood flow and so he might make us go earlier but that doesn't have much to do with twins, he just had an extremely small sac from the beginning and so his placenta must just be too small for him. Just make sure your doctors are great support system and are watching you closely and that alone will make you feel so much more relaxed.

I was worried also but my boys had to be evicted in the end - I was induced at 37+3

I was out at Christmas parties etc at 34 weeks and NY eve party at 35 weeks - I felt fine and apart from not being able tondrove from 30 weeks (Sam was breech and his head under my ribs meant I couldn't turn to look out of side windows) i carried on as usual. Xxx

I do have incompetent cervix (second baby born at 24wks), had a cervical stitch with the twins but still made my planned secrion at 38+2 days honey :) Ptl is always more possible with multiples, but with the appropriate rest when your body needs it (most twin ladies benefit from it) you have every chance of getting to atleast 34wks chick. Nobody worried more than I did sweetie - since previous complications do heighten anxiety - but twins doesn't always equal early delivery so try to relax and enjoy :hugs:
