Hi all,

This has probably been asked a million times but I wanted to see what the general opinion is out there. I've had a mmc and a mc in the past and obviously being extremely cautious now I'm in two minds whether to have a private scan or not. I'm only 6+5 weeks and so I don't even know if they'd be able to pick up Boo's heartbeat but I'm just so worried something is going to go wrong. On one hand I don't want to know just in case something has gone wrong and then I can be happy for a little while longer or alternatively I can have a scan and genuinely be happy! Please help I'm making myself - and my DH - tear our hair out!

If you have history of previous miscarriage, your doc can refer you to your early pregnancy unit for early scans hun, I am just waiting for mine xx

I asked to be referred to an early pregnancy unit but they said they wouldn't do it because I didn't have a higher risk than normal of a mc. Don't understand :dohh: Can I demand to go or do they have to refer me?

Thank you for your advice X

I've had a mmc, didn't find out till my 13 week scan that it had died about 5 weeks.no bleeding cramps ect, was very angry with my body for not giving me any signs and felt very stupid to have told the world at 12 weeks believing I was out of the danger zone. This was 12 years ago and I had a healthy pregnancy months after which resulted in my 11 year oldboy Conor! This pregnancy I'd very unplanned, after years of the times not right fate stuck his nose in and I'm now 13 weeks pregnant. Can't believe it's happened, feel it's the best thing after Conor that's happened to us!! I had a scan at 6 weeks, I didn't feel pregnant and thoughts of mmc was set in my mind. Bubba was there hb ticking away! I can't say that was the end of the worry, a week later my mind wad racing and spent too many days looking for mc signs on this forum it sent me mad! I would say pay for the scan, your far enough along to see the hb so the chance of mc goes down to 3% just don't think for one minute you'll relax!!! Sorry for the long post, had the mist amazing weekend with some friends who have a baby and it's just reinforced my belief that this was meant to be!! Did I mention I was ' 13 WEEKS!!!! Eeeeek!!

Don't worry thank you so much for your post it's really helped me to see that it's something I need to do. Congratulations on your bubba too! Hope you a wonderfully happy and healthy pregnancy X

Thank you new_mummy, it's just driving me mad thinking if my little Boo is ok. I am trying to be so so positive but there's always that moment of doubt that creeps in when you least expect it to and upsets you so much and I just want to check my lickle Boo is ok. Thank you for your advice XX

I had a scan at 6weeks, 5 days and the sonographer told me baby has a heartbeat
I had a pain for a few hours, I went to emergency, the doctor booked me the scan at the EPU because she wanted to exclude an ectopic pregnancy.
Didn;t had mmc before/ectopic etc
So, they are able to find the HB at this stage.

I had a m/c, and my doc had reffered me for an early scan, i think i would try and push a little harder to see if they will refer you first. Or even try calling the EPAC yourself and explain to them the reasons and that you dislike the fact your GP is not helping you, they may book you in directly. If not then i would def pay to have a private one, ive got mine tomorrow at 7+5 and hoping its going to put my mind at lrest somewhat. I think they vary on price depending on where you go, but i know some people on here have paid as little as £25 up to about £80.
Good Luck x

I had a mc in July at 6 weeks. I was spotting and got early scan at EPU which showed nothing there and then later that day I started bleeding heavily. I am 5w 5 days pregnant and have just phoned my EPU myself and asked for an appt as said that I was really worried again. Have booked me in for a Scan next Monday when I will be over 6 weeks. If they hadnt given me a scan I would have went private. If all goes well with this scan I am still planning a private scan just before xmas. I will be about 11 half weeks at Xmas and if scan goes well will tell everyone on Xmas day. I would definatly try to push and get into EPU but if no joy it is well worth paying in my opinion.

I would bypass yr docs n ring the epu at yr hospital. When i had mc My epu said I had every right to! Xx

Thank you so much you guys for all your input - I really appreciate it all :) Thank you all for also sharing your experiences with me, it's extremely kind XXX

I rang the EPU directly and explained that I had had a previous MMC and told them I had absolutely no symptoms (totally true) and was extremely worried I had had another MMC. They bought me in for an early scan at 7 weeks. Everything was fine. Days later I was freaking out again and paid for a private scan for a week later. Again everything was fine. Both times I was so convinced I had already miscarried it wasn't a case of deciding whether to live in blissful ignorance or to find out to reduce my worry, it was more a decision to find out sooner rather than later so I can deal with it and move on.

I would definitely get an early scan. It is priceless information to know that the sac and yolk are in the right place and that there is a heartbeat. Everytime I hear about a woman who miscarries at 12wks only to find out that the pregnancy was over at 5wks it makes me sooo angry that she has been denied the reassurance of a scan. I had a scan at 5.5wk and having another one at 7.5wks. Otherwise I don't know if I would have been able to sleep.

Thank you all of you, I guess I'll phone up my EPU first to see if they will help if not I may just pay for a private scan, sooner rather than later. Just want my Boo to be there alive and happy XXX

I had a miscarriage before I had my LO and in the time it took us to conceive again my local authority had stopped doing reassurance scans. We deiced to pay for one and it really helped to put our minds at ease. I'd say go for it if you're worried.

I guess I just didn't want to seem like I was being pedantic and wanting an early scan for no reason. My GP made me feel like I was 'moaning' about nothing when quite frankly I'm worried sick. Thank you all for your advice it's really helped. I'm going to get hold of the nearest EPU and also see about a private scan that way I can hedge my bets :) X

You are certainly, by no means, being pedantic hun and there is every reason you want this scan, so please don't feel like you are moaning. When you have had a loss, it makes you worry so much! Hope you get a scan sorted xx

Thank you for being so understanding and making me feel better, you've really helped me feel so much better and more in control today X
