Hello ladies,

I had a stressful day today! I am 37 almost 38 years old and this is my first pregnancy. Had my quad screening done on Friday and today I got the phone call that I got a positive for down syndrome. Been stressing over this since. So I decided to see my doctor today and he told me that at my age bracket the chances to have down syndrome babies are 1 out of 133 and my blood test result came back at 1 out of 94. He told me that if I want I can get to do the aminiosyntheses next week. But after hearing 1 out of 94 I am not sure if I want to go for further test because I still have a good chance of having a normal baby.I don't think even my due date is correct according to my last ultrasound which I heard can influence the test.

What do you ladies think? Any experience with that? I am feeling a lot better now after talking to the doctor.

Hey B, (We live in the same city :))

One of the first questions you have to ask yourself is would it make a difference if the test came back as positive? Because if it doesn't then the test isn't really needed.

1 in 94 is still good odds in my opinion. The test that they are also talking about carries a 1 in 200 to 1 in 400 chance of miscarriage (another fun risk to add to all our other worries).

You need to do what will make you feel best in the long term. If you feel you need to know then doing the test is the only real option for you! Waiting 20+ weeks with all that worry would drive you mad.

Personally...I think the odds are still in your favor :)

Hope you sort it out!

Oh sorry Hun. That's a really hard one. Totally agree with Ovetta - it depends how you feel about it. If you are going to worry like crazy for the next 4+ months then maybe amnio is something to consider, but if you are feeling positive & it sounds like you are then maybe not? 1 in 94 sounds like good odds to me, but it's easy to say that from an outside position.

Good luck with whatever you decide xxx

I just wanted to say I got a positive result on Sunday, mine was 1 in 21, and I'm 23. I had a cvs test done on Monday, and my results came back as completely healthy. Just remember it's not just downs they're testing for. I went through with the test as they explained it could be any chromosomal abnormality which could cause serious problems before the birth. I wanted to be fully prepared. It's different for everyone though. I had a very stressful Sunday and Monday morning trying to decide on the right thing and still wasn't 100% sure whilst I was talking to the fetal specialist. I believe I chose the right decision for me, i would of worried up until they were born otherwise. Sit down with your partner and discuss all the pros and cons surrounding the test. It's not an easy decision to make, good luck xx

hi hun. sorry your are going through the worry of this.
i got my results the other week, im 29 and my odds were 1 in 130. we decided not to go ahead with the amnio as the risk of miscarriage is 1 in 100. and like you, we think the odds are still on our side, good luck hun x

I never had my bloods taken for downs but at my 20week scan I was told the babys NT was rather thick and I had to go for another scan and Sam thing babys NT was still thick so I was givin the option to have an amniocentesis.....

We agreed as we wanted to be prepared if baby did have down syndrome, we had the amnio done a few days later and got our results in less than 48hours!!!

All came back fine with baby and I am now almost 27 weeks preggers the chance of mc is very slim and the more weeks u are when u have ur amnio the less and less chance its just they said there is a 1% chance at 16weeks as that is when it is normally done xxx I hope this helps and gl with what ever u decide is rite for you =) xx

your odds still sound good to me especially as you say when compared to the standard odds for the age group.

i think there is also an option of being scanned for soft markers (like nose bone etc) at a later stage as an alternative to the amnio (not sure if the can do at 20 week scan or another time). if the risk worries you but you want more info you could ask about this as it has no risk since it just done by ultrasound.

Best of luck whatever you decide. x

The odds are stacked in your favour, so the chances are you will still have a baby without DS. However, I think that if this is going to plague your thoughts for the rest of the pregnancy, and therefore stop you from enjoying it, or prevent you from bonding etc, then I think you should consider having further testing done. If you're happy to leave it then great. You need to do what's right for you and your OH.

Thank you so mcuh ladies for all you comments:). It is a hard decision. But it took us so long to finally be able to conceive that Not having this baby is not an option. We are hoping for a normal baby but we will keep our eyes on the ultrasounds and if we start to see abnormalities we will try to do our best to research and be more informed about what is necessary to help us become a better parents of a ds baby. I have a feeling that everything will be okay. Just have moments when I panic a little:). And again after seeing so many people having a false positive result for this test I have 94 out of 1 chances of having a normal baby. I will keep you all posted on the progress. When our baby comes out and it is normal I will definetely would skip this test!! It just makes you stressed out! This baby will be loved either way:).

My cousin was same age as you when she had her baby and she was classed as high risk for Down's syndrome baby but baby came out perfectly fine - not problems at all. You've decided that not having the baby is not an option so why put yourself through the amnio thing - can't spell it :)?

wishing you lots of luck, I think you made the right decision. I personally don't do the downs screening test as I would not abort either way. I am 27. I hope that everything goes really well for you.

Sorry to hear you are going through this. It is all too familiar to me. A few weeks ago we received a 1/160 result for Downs. I am 31 yrs old and this is our first baby. Our genetics counselor suggested we wait for the 20 week ultrasound, and they would look for the Down's markers.

We had out ultrasound yesterday and there were no markers for Downs. Everything looked perfectly healthy. This helped me to make the decision not to have amnio. You might want to wait for your big ultrasound and then make the decision from there.

Ahh hun.. Big hugs! Its hard hearing results like these... I think you that they look at all the results as a whole rather than looking at individual parts of the test..
My nuchal was higher than normal and my blood work was fine apart from my hgc. Did you doctor tell you the results of your bloods? My HGC was very high but the rest normal which is a marker for DS....

Our results were 1:5 for DS..... I was very very shocked and upset... Me and DH are 28. We had two failed attmepts at cvs and eventually had an amino. Which came back clear. Consultant also looked for markers on the scan which helped put our mind at rest. I think that if we had been given your odds we wouldn't have had the amino.. The stress waiting to have it and the possible outcome was a horrible experience to have to go through. Sometimes we have wonky blood work.. sometimes the nuchal is higher than normal.. sometimes like us its a combination of both and it all turns out fine!

Keep strong and try not to stress too much, I certainly did a lot if you have any questions give me a shout.. it helped me immensely to talk to others in the same situation... esp people with a positive outcome! xx

Just wanted to add a lady at my work who is 38 got a 1:65 for DS. She did not have the amino but did have a perfectly healthy baby girl xxx

Hi Sarah

Hearing stories like yours give me hope:hugs:. The doctor told me the 4 tests that they do for down syndrome and 3 of then were normal, just one was like half of the number they were expecting to be. He told me the names of the exams but they are very hard to remember. There is a part of me that wants to do the amnio but there is the other part that thinks I am being paranoid and that everything will be okay. Hubby and I will make our final decision about the amnio this weekend.

Thanks again:). God bless you with a healthy pregnancy:).

I just wanted to give you a big :hugs:.

We were told that our baby has a high NT measurement at the 12 week scan, but all the blood work came back fine. We have worried ourselves silly for the past 7 weeks.

I was going to do the quadruple test at between 16 and 18 weeks. My OB told me that she considers the test to be unreliable and that if I came back with a positive test for DS she would be no more concerned than with a negative one. We decided not to have the Quadruple test. She checked the length of the femur at the 16 week scan and said it was fine. We have our 20 week scan on Friday and they will check for soft markers for DS, as well as doing a fetal echocardiogram. I pray that everything will be okay for us all.

The amnio is very much a personal choice. Good luck.

my sister test came back as a very high risk
went threw with the preg and had a healthy happy boy
hope this helps
goodluck
xx

My mom had my baby sister when she was 33/34 she got 3 positives on her quad tests (by 2 different dr's) and was told if I remember correctly 1 in 3 or 4... well, my sister who is now 13 is a perfectly healthly beautiful teen. Good luck to you hun! Keep your head up and positive thoughts... your numbers seem very optimistic!
