Question about winding

My health visitor told me that breast fed babies don't tend to suffer with wind.
Does this mean that I don't need to wind LO after every feed? The reason I ask is because most of the time LO falls asleep at the breast and it seems such a shame to wake him up burping him!
He does sometimes seem like he has wind when he wriggles and lifts his legs to his body.
Can I just wind him then or will it have to be after every feed?

Thanks

I think that bf babies don't get wind is a myth! My LO suffered terribly, and we had to give him infacol and burps him lots after each feed.

No, I'd defo wind after every feed. Its not just feeding that gives them wind. sucking a dummy and even crying can give them a lot of wind.

eta - although if hes asleep i dont see the harm in leaving it for a while. Make sure you do wind him regularly though.

Ihsan used to get alot of wind and I would have to burp him every time for a good while 10-15minutes sometimes. Normally I would put him over my shoulder and rub his back until he was settled and he always slept better and for longer then. Your lo could wake up earlier from a nap if he has wind so its probably best to do it before you put him down if you can. x

Yeah, I was told the same thing in the hospital, but when the MW visited me at home she said that I should wind him. Some women do, some don't. Just depends. We had to use infacol for a while, but now he'll burp himself about half the time.

I was told the same in hospital.. So she was screaming mad for a week until the midwife told me she probably had wind. Since then I wind her after every feed apart from some nightfeeds (she doesn't gulp the air in so much then).

She does proper manburps, giving her dad a run for his money. So definitely a myth!
Nowadays when I just lift her up from feeding position 9/10 times she'll burp straight away.

I've always winded

If he fell asleep would just gently rise his head up while still holding him in the cradle hold, so that his head was higher than his tummy iykwim. I'd just tap his bottom and he'd burp :haha: having said that he's never been a really windy baby and never had a hard time bringing it up

I think it depends on the baby. My LO has never winded much. I tried when she was younger to no avail. I pretty much don't ever wind her as it just disturbs her and doesn't help.

I always wind Isla after a feed, but she is a very windy baby. She's always gulping in air.

I didn't wind my first baby at all. I kind of forgot about it:dohh: by the time I saw other mum's winding their babies I had already been not winding her for a month so I didn't see the point in starting up then! I had a really rubbish supply first time round so she didn't do much gulping, she didn't suck a dummy and she didn't cry much either.

Sally gets upset at the boob sometimes so I do wind her then but after her night feeds if she falls asleep I don't wind her. She quite often sleeps a five to six hour stretch in the late evening so I don't think it's doing her any harm:shrug: In some countries they don't wind babies at all.

I winded Bethan until she was a few months old, and then a doctor told me that we're one of the only countries that wind babies after feeds, which I thought was interesting. So I stopped doing it, and we didn't notice any difference.

But the BF babies not being windy is definitely a myth; Bethan farts like a trooper! :haha:
