Question for ladies in the UK

Okay, so this will be our first miracle baby! And I've been wondering a few things...

Do they show you how to do things before they send you home when it's your first baby? I mean, I got an email from What To Expect When Expecting all about bathtime for baby. And, as much as I read the whole article which was full of hints and tips, do they actually SHOW you how to do it at the hospital before you come home? I'm really scared in case I don't hold baby right and they slip out of my hands! Scariest thought ever :-(

Also, how quickly do they kick you out after baby is born? lol :/ Seems to me that the women I know who have had babies have been out of hospital within a couple hours of baby being born (unless baby had to be monitored for any reason). Do they really just throw you into the deep end like that or is it personal choice?

Just a couple things I've been wondering about lol. Probably sounds like silly things to worry about when we got the whole labour part to look forward to, not to mention finishing off all the preparations... but there you have it lol. THAT'S what I've been worried about haha.

Hiya hun, i had a home birth an i wasnt shown anything but i had 2 younger siblings an 4 young cousins who i helped bath when i was younger so i knew anyway. Im certain if ur unsure they will just send you away! Practice with a doll!

Hiya. They will demo how to bath baby in the hospital,at least they did when I had my son 17 years ago,as the nurse chose my son to do the demo on. Re everything else,I'm not sure, things may have changed a lot in 17 years....:hugs:

I think it depends on what type of delivery you have regarding being 'kicked out', e.g. a c-section will mean being in hospital for 2-4 days -- why not ask your midwife? (I'm going private here in Ireland and having a c-section, my health insurance will provide for five days in hospital). Also, there should be antenatal classes available to help you with baby practicalities, as there are here for public and private mothers, so perhaps your midwife or local surgery could give you advice?

It's my first baby as well, but I'm getting a nursery night nurse for the first few nights (my insurance will cover this), so am hopeful that she/he will help this confused first timer mum....

best wishes

I'm ok with feeding, My aunty had her little boy 4 months ago so I've fed him alot, but maybe I should borrow him and get her to let me bath him too lol XD If she was talking to me right now I would, but she's not so I can't lol. Silly family arguments -.- haha

I wasnt shown anything when I had my son! He was born early and although he didnt need any assistance or monitoring, he was premature and I'd had a c-section, but we were still sent home after about 24 hours! I even had to ask for help to change his nappy, I'd never changed one before and I'd only just been stitched back up a few hours before! I hope your hospital is more considerate x

Thanks ladies, I will make a not to ask my midwife when I go in. And when I re-read my post "kicked out" sounded awful lol... didn't mean it to sound horrible lol.

I guess we'll pick things up as we go mostly haha.

Dressing baby is somethingI'm not keen on either... they seem so tiny and delicate haha, I'm scared I'll break something. But I know that they're tougher than they look, just getting over the fear I suppose!

That sounds horrible pixydust :( I hope your next experience is better, although I suppose you'll be a little more prepared with it being your second... but still, you'd have thought they'd want to monitor for a couple days to make sure your little boy was ok if he was prem! That's shocking!

I was joking when I used 'kicked out', but it sounds like poor pixydust was!

not lol! growl instead!

best wishes

i think it can all depend on how busy the hospital is at the time. i know some 1st time mums who have had a normal birth and thought it would be best for them to stay in 1night. i had dd back in northern ireland via c section. the next day they wer goin about the ward asking those who had there baby had they seen how to bath etc. as i was the only 1 at the time they took me and oh down and showed us how to bath a baby etc. tho i have seen alot of people bath there baby differently from how they show u. i hope that u get all the help u hope for at the hospital, as i know how scary it can be, even this time i will be asking for any help that i need. esp seeing as things change so quickly xx
