Random -pregnant with pets!!

Our cats have got to be the worst cats in the world for shedding hair - granted won't be great with a baby but just another thing to be careful with. And anyway it's mostly a vanity thing (hate those scruffy hairs on my dark-coloured clothes!) and I don't think babies are too concerned about that.

Never heard of a furnimator - but just googled and it sounds great! And can be used on cats! I am absolutely going to try - thanks!!

I have Northern Inuits that moult as much as our old husky did but a combo of a good hoover and a furnimator keep the hair down. They are about £15 for a comb type thing but they are great.

I think people get a bit over paranoid about things now with babies, i grew up on a small holding with all sorts of animals and slept in the dog basket! I was forever covered in mud and hair but now as an adult i have no alligies and when i was little i was never ill. Maybe we are all a bit too eager to be too clean these days

My mum and her 4 sisters grew up on farms. Cows, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese - plus farm cats, dogs etc. You name it, it was there. + Mud. Never did any of them any harm.

There is clean as in making sure clothes are clean, bodies are clean and house is clean and tidy. And there is obsessive - nuking everything within an inch of its life with detol and being paranoid.

I've seen a Vanish ad on the telly that goes on about killing the "bacteria in your clothes". I was like FFS when I first heard it. Our bodies are covered in bacteria, and our insides to. We'd be dead without them. Not all bacteria are bad. Bacteria in clothes was just the height of pandering to the paranoid!

You just have to be sensible if pregnant about stuff like toxoplasmosis so wash your hands, don't go near cat litter, that kind of thing. And of course when you have little one's crawling about its common sense to make sure there's not mess everywhere and to keep things ship shape. But our immune systems need to learn about our environment. The world is not a medicated bubble. I was very very keen to have the cat about when my son was a babe, because I wanted his body to get used to dander and fluff and the like. Seems common sense to avoid problems later with allergies/asthma etc.

I just googled a furminator and bought one brand new straight away off ebay for £6! BARGAIN! :D

So glad i have helped people find the furminator they really are great for helping to keep down hair and unlike rakes dont seem to irritate the skin. I also brought mine off ebay but it was a while ago now! Think i may need to replace the blades soon after Ela's moult (she is the one in the middle) The birdies love the fur for there nests as well, there are going to be some cosy chicks around here come spring!

I have 3 cats and a vizsla. Im not worried at all about my pets and the baby.

I'm just about 30 weeks pregnant now and I've been walking my dog at least 2 hours a day plus the dog park each day, through morning sickness and backaches! Sure, it's a pain to keep up with the furminator and the vacuuming, but when I adopted my Shiba Inu puppy, he is for life!!! I look forward to my son having wonderful memories of "his" doggie 15 years from now, just like I did when I was a kid.

If we're lucky enough to get to 12 weeks and tell my inlaws I just know they will expect us to get rid of our two cats but I just couldn't bear to, they are part of our family - in fact they currently are our family!!

Ok guys got a bit of a random question /rant.

i am an animal lover and i have 2 dogs and 2 young 7 month old kittens.
well it really bugs me what certain ppl have said since finding out im pregnant, that ill have to get rid of the cats and possibly the dogs i was furious. they are not disposable they are living breathing lil personalitys who are a big part of our family which we love to pieces.

obviously we have to be a bit cautious when the baby does come along even though our dogs are the most placid gentle natures but you can never trust any dog 100% !
and i have heard storys that cats will smell the milk on the baby and smother it by sitting on it- dont know if that is true or not ? the pets will be kept away from the baby room anyways.

it just does annoy me when i see adverts for poor dogs up for sale because the owners are expecting a baby surely when u have a dog you know the life expectancy so why get a dog if u know further down the line your simply going 2 get rid!! ooofff it annoys me.!! sorry rant over lol

my question is do any of you have pets and a new arrival?? and if its really hard or easy to cope.??

obviously atm my oh is on poop duty which i think shes thrilled at pmsl:dohh:

new here so my first post. hi!!!

i was raised on a farm. we had pigs chickens, horses and over 450 goats. when i was 11 i fell quite ill. i had mono but was not getting any better. i had several tests run and they thought i had cancer and was in liver failure. it turned out i had toxoplasmosis. took me a year and a half but i finally felt better. i had my firrst son when i was 18 and luckily because i already carry the toxo my babies were born immune!! definitely a blessing as they feared what could happen. i have just found out i am pregnant with number 3. definitely a big surprise but we know a blessing when we are given one. i have 2 boys so i'm of course hoping for a girl! anyway, i guess i wanted to share that i agree that my dog is like my child. i had dogs through out having my two boys and i could not imagine just giving them away. go with your heart and just be careful. who is going to run and just stick their hand in the litter box in the first place? it's common sense. my exhusband had a kitten when my youngest son was born and we put a baby gate up to bathroom door. kept the baby away from the box and out of the toilet. haha goodluck with your animals and baby!!

I have a dog and two cats, and trust me they are just as much my family as my DH is LOL. We got our dog right after we got married last year and so she has grown with us as a family and one of our cats we got from my DH grandmother after she passed (her cat just had kittens) and our second one was a stray that we are gonna keep. The thought of giving them away or selling them never even crossed my mind. My MIL is not happy we are keeping the pets because she thinks "they will consume too much time away from baby" but my parents completely understand that they are our furbabies!

It has blades? I just thought it was a comb!? It isn't going to cut her fur is it?

I haven't read any replies only your original post and I must say it really annoys me too. For goodness sake don't these people do any research before they make these rash decisions?

As for cats smelling the milk on the babies breath, what a load of rubbish. Chances are a cat will steer well clear of a small baby whose cries are piercing. People need to take responsibility and keep pets away from baby. It's not difficult. And lastly, growing up with a pet and the responsibility of having one is great for kids.

There are rare cases where there is no other option but to rehome a pet. In this instance you do all you can to make sure your beloved pet goes to a great new home.

i have 4 dogs 3 huskies and a collie cross and 2 cats a ragdoll and a tabby and i would never get rid of any of my pets simply because i am pregnant. i was brought up with cats and dogs and various other animals throughout my childhood and no harm ever came to me. i would trust my animals around my baby would i would still never leave the baby unattended with them.

No it wont cut the fur but it does have this comb like blade that can get blunt or rusty i think? Well i am sure you can replacements for it anyway . . . LOL i may be wrong though maybe they are just if you break it? :dohh:

biggest problem i ever had with my cats is that they used to sleep in the moses basket before the baby was born! (had it all set up you see!) but you can get cat nets.

I've never had dogs myself but i'd be very wary with a hunting breed of dog - when ds was tiny i went to see some friends who had a dog and the dog was fine with children but when it saw the baby it went on point!! to the dog it was just another rat!

and there was that case of the grandmother who left the 3 month old baby asleep, then she fell asleep and the 2 dogs killed the baby. i know that's a rarity but i do think with dogs they can't help their hunting instincts so you have to be super extra careful.

Personally i would like to have a dog but wouldn't have one while the children are small but that's just me. But that doesn't mean I'd get rid of ones i'd got, i'd just be really really careful with them. sensible i suppose.

but cats are fine. my 2 kids are still alive. unless u have a really bad tempered moggy of course.

tho my cats disappeared once ds was born. not straight away but they weren't getting as much fuss and attention - its hard to have a cat on ur knee while ur breast feeding! but we have 2more now.

I just have a chinchilla - I don't think that will cause much risk to a LO if all goes well on that front. I do worry I won't be able to devote as much time to her as I do now.....but I certainly won't be giving her away!!!

I have a hunting dog and hes perfect around my sister inlaws baby. He love her licks her and like to sleep near her. He is a bird dog. He also knows not to eat the cat :)

This is our dog, she is so soft, she too was bred as a working dog but we decided to have her as a pet and not work her.
