I used cloth with DD, till potty training. she is still wet at night and I just started her back in the cloth at night. As soon as she pees they smell AWFUL. They don't smell from water though.
I've tried a couple washed with vinegar, what else can I do? DH hates cloth to begin with and this isn't helping my argument to use them with the expedited baby!
Do I wash the covers too? They are FLIP with some organic cotton liners and some hemp liners.
THANKS!!

Let me add I washed them in borax too. And that her urine isn't that bad in disposables. It's not really a urine smell....

It sounds like they need stripping, there are links with how to in my signature. When detergent gets trapped in the fabric it also traps bacteria which can then make the nappies stink after only one wee. You would probably notice the smell a bit if you tumble dried them too - the warmth really brings it out!

Do you mean do you need to wash the covers after a night of use? Yes, you do really. You can often wipe out the covers and reuse them during the day but I would only do that if they weren't very wet and I would start with a fresh cover each day, so after a full night you will need to wash the cover. If you're not doing, that could be part of the smell.

Ive found that my Flip covers tend to end up stinkier, like pee, after a pee, compared to my Thirsties covers? No idea why.

I'd guess that's because there is more of the outside fabric inside the nappy. It's not really absorbent but it will hold onto enough to retain odour, unlike the reverse wipe-clean side of the PUL.
