Ok,I've totally forgotten what are they used for??? I mean,I've had them for my first two yrs and yrs ago so...don't know what I was using them for but I have them on my list now and maybe sounds stupid-but really-what are receiving blankets used for????

I always use them to swaddle my babies when they were born.I would wrap them up before allowing someone to hold them. Not sure what their real purpose is but thats what I use them for:thumbup:

I read your post and thought by receiving blanket you meant a muslin? If thats correct its for catching spit up. I permeantly had one on my shoulder for the first few months. Also sometimes used them for drying bums after a nappy change (a different one obviously!!!)
My second was really refluxy so we got through loads.
Hope that answers the question.

I've always used them to swaddle, or to lay on the floor for them to lay on or change their diaper, or catch spit up while burping to substitute a burp cloth. xx

I used them for swaddling (since they don't stretch as bad and allow you to swaddle all nice and tight!), laying down on a couch or floor as a clean spot to change a diaper, and as puke rags. My son was really refluxy, so receiving blankets and cloth diapers (that never got used as diapers...) were the only effective way to catch his constant spitting up.

Oh... I also used them to cover his face in the carseat when we went outside in the wind or the bright sun. I tucked him around him in his carseat if he was feisty and we needed to go somewhere (it must've felt like a swaddle, always calmed him down) and occasionally even used them as bath towels when his other ones were dirty! :haha:

Never heard of them!! Never had any with my first...

Normal cellular blankets - for sleeping/swaddling

Muslins/burp cloths/bibs for breast/bottlefeeding:flower:

Obviously, receiving blanket is a US term, a cotton blanket used for swaddling, etc. :)

I was told by my birthing center I was to bring 5 of them to the birth. I can't imagine how you would go through that many blankets in 6-8 hours. I know they'll be mostly used for swaddling. I have four of the cotton flannel ones and four muslin ones.
