I have just had Hannah to the paediatrian and had her weighed. Since she was last there she has only gained 5oz in 2 weeks according their scales. I hope this isn't too long a story but it goes like this.

Hannah is 12 weeks old, (6 weeks adj) and was having top ups, just 2 a day of formula and only 3oz each time. I gradually weaned her off them 6 days ago so she is EBF. She has been feeding loads since I stopped them with very little vomitting either. She feeds for hours at a time but no 2 days are the same!!

Now I have been told this morning that I have to start giving her top ups again as she was gaining on them. I have been crying at the thought of this, sorry if that sounds pathetic, it's just we have been through so much to get this far that I was really hoping this wouldn't happen!

Her nappies have been normal, output and frequency. She started smiling last week too.

Any advice please. Feel like I have gone backwards by 6 weeks!!!

Tell em to piss off.

5ozs in 2 wks isn't so bad FFS what do they want? 3lbs???:dohh:

Do you have to take her to be weighed? If she's ok then surely you can make your own decisions, just go monthly or something. The paediatrician said she was fine didn't he? So tell the HV to bugger off:finger:

I haven't had Erin weighed since she was 7wks:blush: and she's 15wks now. I would like to go soon coz I'm interested how much she weighs but that's the only reason I'm taking her.

You have 3 other kids so plenty of experience with babies and kids and you will know if there's something amiss won't you. Don't doubt your motherly instincts babe:hugs:

It's the pead that has said this today. My HV is happy with me but the pead and midwife are the ones giving me grief. I wouldn't go if I didn't have to but she won't discharge me!

:hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy::hissy:
for you.

Cancel your next appointment or two and say you're ill or can't get there, swine fever or something and see how you get on without the pressure:happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance::happydance:

thats more than sienna been putting on, and they said to ebf and just get weighed frequently, aslong as its not stayed the same for more than 2 weighings, and hasnt gone down they fine with it. topping off was the worst thing i did, and hv has said if worst comes to the worst we will look at eff, which im determined wont happen

xxx

Good idea Hevs, think I will be ill for the next app and then go back in 2 months or something and just see how we have been doing at the breast feeding support group I go to. They actually help there and offer bfing advice and not, quick let's find an alternative to the bfing!

:rofl:I'm such a bad influence:blush:

I would just need to shake off the midwife that still haunts me at home!

You can refuse the MW entry and can refuse her care. They can't force you to keep seeing her if you don't want to.

I agree - too much emphasis is put on these bloody charts and trying to get babies to bulk up!! :grr:

Follow your instincts like women have been doing for the goodness knows how many eons of years before HVs!!!!! xx

You know your baby... if she is having lots of wet diapers on just bm and seems happy, then stick to that... the more she feeds the more efficient she will become... It only becomes a danger if she is becomming dehydrated and losing weight.

I didn't know I could refuse care. I must be a right mug. Won't it make me look really bad though and only make them scrutinise me even closer?

How long do the MW's keep coming in your area hun?? Mine stopped at 9days! Then it was the HV who came once a week for 2 or 3 weeks max then it was up to me to drop in to clinic for weigh in. My next home visit is at 7 months - I guess to check how weaning is going.

x

:hugs: dont worry Suzanne, I bet she is just fine, ignore them and do what you think is best xx

Can you express much milk? What I did, maybe not the greatest thing to do but it gets 'em off your back, was to express and save it up for a day then give my baby a big bf (both sides) plus a bottle of expressed right before he got weighed so he wouldn't have time to pee it all out.

Normally the MW stops at 9 days like you but because H took 6 weeks to reach her birth weight they wouldn't discharge her and keep coming to harrass me. Even though she reached her bw they still keep coming! They keep moving the goal posts for us and it is heart breaking!

This is good idea and I willing to do anything to get them off our back tbh

My little girls weight gain has really slowed down in the past couple of months, granted she wasn't prem-ridiculously overcooked actually, but initially she was gaining 8oz a week but for the past 8 weeks (she's 15 weeks) she's only been gaining 3-4oz a week max. I was a bit concerned as she's dropped off her centile but everyone-paediatrician/HV/GP- has said as long as there are plenty wet/dirty nappies and that she's gaining and not losing then everything is fine!!! I think they should be supporting you and trying to find ways to help you continue exclusive bf not simply advising top ups. As far as i know though you are entitled to feed your baby however you want and if i was you i would simply refuse to give top ups unless they can prove not to would be detrimental to babies health. How much do they expect her to gain? A pound a fortnight or just a few more ounces? Go with your instinct, if your baby is happy and content within herself then carry on as you are and good luck xxx
Alternatively tell them you're giving top ups but don't!

The last time I went to the peads doc dd had been gaining 6oz a week! And that still wasn't enough. That was with top ups though!
