Risks of trying with low male motility morphology?

Hi all,

Bit of a newbie here but have been reading the posts on and off for a long while.

Unfortunately my partner has low everything and I have just got him started on a multi-vitamin, L-Carnitine, Zinc and MACA. We will test him again in 3 months.

It will be so interesting to see if my suggestions will help!

The scary thing (for me) is that he wants to start trying anyway.

I feel a little nervous about whether or not his bad quality sperm could cause miscarriages, or produce a sick or deformed child.

I have tried to do a little bit of research on whether or not there is more chance of problems - and they very vaguely say it doesn't 'seem' so. Does anyone know much about this?

Theoretically the low motility/low morphology ones shouldn't make it to the egg anyway.....

I think I would rather do IVF so that the fertility specialists choose the best graded /best performing egg and I can have peace of mind that we did the best we could. (Also, my partners work will pay for this so the extra costs vs going naturally won't be a factor for us)

The other reason for going the IVF route is so that we may have some back ups for a second child later down the track.

I am nearly 38 now so if I got pregnant naturally now - I lose another two more years of age and trying for the second. This means I wouldn't start trying for the second until I am 40. It just seems like a good idea to freeze as many as we can now while we have the chance to stockpile to improve our odds once I am 40+.

He keeps saying he wants to try naturally now - I think he wants to try naturally as an ego male thing - just so he can say he did it lol.

I'd rather go the IVF route. Does anyone agree?! Or am I being a control freak haha.

So anyway, has anyone done any research into the risks of trying naturally with bad male fertility? Was anyone else really nervous/sick about the thought of what may happen with bad quality sperm?

Thank you!

(PS Luckily he is away for the next 6 weeks - plus I don't want a christmas or NYE baby so at least in the meantime he can work on his quality with vitamins and we can aim to start in MAY :))

I don't have an answer, sorry, just wanted to wish you good luck! Hopefully you can get the answers you need. Maybe check with an OB? :hugs:

to be honest even if he had great sperm there is still that risk of having a disabled baby. of those things that can't be helped.
every baby is a blessing and should be seen as that.
my hubby had border line low sperm, took us 2 years to conceive our eldest we now have 2 boys. my hubby was due to go tour on my eldest due date but because of complications in my pregnancy they sent someone else luckily

^ agree with little. Getting pregnant is always a risk. My husband and I are both perfectly healthy and my son was still born with a birth defect that was never found prior to birth. There was never a way to know about it until he was here (not that it would have changed anything) and that risk is always there.

BUT I dont think youre a control freak. Its possible that your husband has other reservations about IVF aside from ego. Some people arent comfortable with the idea of frozen embryos or "test tube babies" and arent good at explaining why. Not saying your husband is in that camp but it might be another reason he wants to try natural first.

I dont think low motility should affect the actual genetic content of sperm, but if youre really feeling pressed for time, starting the ivf process might be worth it :)

Thanks all, I've been so busy with friends baby's events that I haven't had time to do my own research on this question yet. Hoping to see a specialist when my guy is back in town and get his professional opinion. I'll be sure to write back.

If anyone has living proof /good stories about what increased their male motility/morphology/quantity etc please let me know.

I'm so glad I've finally found a guy that wants to have a baby asap (it's been a hellish ride trying to find a decent guy :() and one that is willing to take all these things :) I just hope that it will be possible and all turns out well. :s

My husband has 1% Morphology. We have had 7 chemical pregnancies since trying to conceive. One of which was on a medicated iui. We just switched clinics and this one does believe that some sperm can try to fertilize the egg if it can get itself there but it will be rejected and fail to implant properly because of its structure and DNA. So don't worry! Your body will naturally let go of the bad ones!
