Hi all! I am 23 weeks and have cut down my smoking drastically but I am really scared to quit. I had a miscarrige very early in my last pregnancy right around the time that I quit. Just wondering if anyone has any stories about quitting cold turkey in their second or third trimesters. I keep quitting and then when I feel a bit of stress I think that I am now using it as an excuse to smoke! Just need a little conformation that I am not hurting my baby by quitting and going thru a bit of withdrawl.

Thanks in advance!!

Noway girl quitting is only going to help your baby be heathier!!! Your miscarriage last time with the quitting at the same time, total coincidence. Miscarriages are so common and they are never caused by somene quitting smoking!! I hope you stop cold turkey for your babys health and for yours!
There is a book my dad read and it made him quit cold turkey. IT is called "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr. It is a really easy read and while you are reading the book it says you can keep smoking while reading it and you still will quit by the end. It works for a lot of people! Couldn't hurt to try! see link below

i quit cold turkey as well when i was 25 weeks. i started back though. i am now trying to quit again and this time hoping my hubby will quit too so i can stay successful with it.

Don't worry, quit cold turkey is the BEST way to quit. and it does not harm your baby. it doesn't put your baby in shock or anything of that sort, either. trust me, i asked my dr everything the 2nd day i had been quit... good luck sweetie.

maybe we can be each others support. Are you in the US? If so maybe we can be text buddies & quit together!

Oh honey stopping is by far the best way to ensure your baby's and your health. I stopped in 1999, cold turkey from 40 a day to nothing and it was during that first month of hell that I conceived my firstborn. Yes its stressful stopping smoking but my doctor told me that a massive amount of stress is better on the baby than 1 cigarette. That was enough to stop me giving in them again.
Hugs and strength because you will need it. I am the most weak willed person in the world so if I can do it, you can. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I am currently back to the two cigs a day part. I stopped but got stressed and had one. Problem at my end my hubby can stop with no problems, but he turns nasty and then he winds me up and stressing me out so i smoke. Keep strong and I heard that book is very good and will invest in it myself i think as wil give anything a go. Good luck honey.

p.s this is what helps me to cut down but it is a bit upsetting so dont read below if you dont want

I picture my baby swimming around in tar and that soon stops the cravings

i quit when i was 9 weeks very hard but BEST thing for your little baby, stays trong hun..

You are hurting your baby alot more by smoking, believe me. Quitting smoking will not induce a miscarriage. I quit cold turkey as soon as i got my BFP - it's possible.

As all the other ladies have said quitting is the best thing you could do for your baby  I used to smoke 20per day then quit cold turkey at 6 weeks pregnant I couldn't live with the thought of harming my growing baby in any way  also my husband does not smoke and he would have went crazy if I dared smoke whilst carrying his baby :baby::baby:

Im the exact same, quit cold turkey at 6weeks hubby would have killed me other wise, for me the quiting part was easy, with every pregnancy this is no3 the babies have not let me lol, just the thought of smoking or smelling it makes me want to throw my guts up,so thankyou babies for that lol,my hardest is when they have been born i have went back on the cigs like nothing has happened, well not this time I have promised my kids and hubby that I wont go back on the cigs,Im seeing this as third time luck and last chance to quit and you can do it to honey, just be strong!!!

I second the suggestion to read Alan Carr the Easy Way to Stop Smoking. Can't praise it enough, never thought I could/would give up smoking. You can smoke while reading it too. Give it a go - you have nothing to lose. Good luck :)

I quit when I found out too and I know it can be so hard. Lots of positive thoughts coming your way hun, go for it x x x

If you cant go cold turkey maybe try patches or gum which are 100% safe in pregnancy
xxx

its hard but for the best i quit my 20 day habit when i was 5 weeks it was hard but couldnt live with the fact i was smoking and my baby was growing inside me.

I quit on previous pregnancies and suffered miscarriages - I quit on this one and didnt - the MC's have NOTHING to do with the smoking honey - honest.

Quitting is the best thing to do - I went cold turkey - although my sister used the Allen Carr book too and thoroughly recommends it.

When I went cold turkey and had a craving I had kept repeating "whats more important the baby or the fag" it helped me put the craving in perspective

Good luck with the quitting.

I agree with RileysMummy, however, if you do plan on using aids, make sure you talk to your dr/mw about it.

You can do it hun, make an appointment with your nurse for support, or at a quit smoking centre.

Good luck xx

hey,
im quitting now as we speak, although i prefer to look at it as i dont smoke anymore. i am 19 weeks and have been struggling to quit cold turkey on and off since 4 weeks. i finally plucked up the courage 2 weeks ago to see a midwife lead smoking service and the support has been amazing. she suggested to me that i try NRT as cold turkey just wasnt working and in her words 'with nicotine replacement i could have been off the cigs and off the nicotine replacement a long time ago if i had started at the beggining'. I tried 1 week with nicorette gum (free on prescription with your maternity exemption, and 100% safe) however not much luck i lasted 2 days and went bk on the cigs. I went back this week as i see her every week and she suggested we not give up trying and go for the patches.
Im now on mid strength patches and on day 5 of quitting, the first 2 days were by far the hardest. but now even the smell of smoke makes my stomach turn. i cannot believe that it has taken this long and i am acctually quite ashamed. but its better late than never. and now the cravings are at bay all is left to do is begin to step down the nicotine which i plan to do in the next few weeks. I can now feel little ones movements alot stronger too which is obviously down to little ones growth but i like to think of it as his/her way of telling me that they appreciate the fact that iv finally managed to do it x

like someone else has said n im sure that u no urself quitting smoking didnt bring on ur mc which im sorry to hear u went thru:(

i was a heavy smoker and i quit cold turkey once i got my bfp at 4 weeks, quitting is not easy but do it for ur baby thats what helped me quit.

the smoking is obviously not helping ur baby, i hate smoking in pregnancy and smoking around children as it makes me so mad because my mum smoked while preg with me n also had added stress of my dad being a dick and she almost lost me several times, lost my twin and i was 4 weeks early.
then i grew up around second hand smoke round my nans and it caused me to develop ashtma.

dont be scared to quit, u will feel so much better after u quit as its horrible being addicted to something.
