Apologies if i sound really thick (its a common occurance) but m mind is totally blown by the whole preschool nursery reception foundation key stage year 1 blah blah.
I have been reading about 5000 different web pages including dircet gov and other official ones and they all seem to phrase things slightly differently so im baffled. So i thought id ask some straightforward (hopefully) questions here:

1) Is preschool the same as Nursery in school (my local schools have a nursery, reception, year 1, year 2 etc) or is it like a seperate institution like a daycare nursery?
IE. Agewise, am i right in thinking it goes Daycare, preschool, nursery, reception, year 1 etc

2) Children legally have to start school the year they turn 5, is that Reception or Year 1?

3) Basically if Tommy turns 2 in October 2011, 3 in 2012, 4 in 2013 and 5 in 2014; when would he legally have to start school and what year/stage would that be?

Thank you SO much for any help. I feel like im meant to already just know this stuff but i don't, i feel so thick

I will try, i am not 100% sure of nursery/pre-school but i'll try to help where i can!
1) My understanding is that pre school and nursery are the same- our school used to have a nursery attached to it, where they started when they were 3. Then they go onto reception then year 1 etc.
2) They start in the reception class the year they turn 5. So a child born in august will only just be 4 by the time they start but will turn 5 that academic year.
3) he will start reception in 2014, he will be one of the oldest in his class.

If u need any other help just ask, i was a reception teacher before i became a stay at home mum so i do kind of know the schooly things, its before that that confuses me! lol x

1, Yes pre-school is nursery. Pre-school is an American term
Katie goes to nursery 2 half days a week, she will stay there till she is 4.

Then like Tommy, she will start reception then Year 1 and Y2 etc :)

When he turns 3 in Oct 12, he can start nursery (free sessions) in Jan 13.

He will start Reception in Sept 2014.

He should start Year 1 in Sept 2015.

HTH.

Nursery, pre-school and playschool are essentially the same. ALthough generally nurseries are for children from birth upwards where are play schools only take the children from 2years 6months - give or take.

Playschool to reception (i.e. aged 2.5 to 5) is foundation stage, KS1 is 'infant school' usually years 1-3, KS2 is 'junior school' usually years 4-6.

IRO of when they have to go - legally your child does not have to start school until the term after they are 5. Foundation stage is not compulsory. Therefore my son turned 4 in August this year and we don't have to send him to school until Sept 2012. However if you choose to not send them to school until they are 5 you are not guaranteed a school place in the school of your choice. We really wanted to do this but found that although we have a right to keep him in a playschool we would be unlikely to get him in a school in our area.

Over here we have playgroup (A child can go here if their 3rd Birthday is after July 1st) then Nursery/pre-school then year1, year2 ect.ect.

Thank you so much! The annoying thing is is thats how i thought it worked untill i started reading into it and confused myself! The only thing that did baffle me is the preschool/nursery/playschool thing. Im sure people only invent these different names to confuse me lol :dohh:
Thanks again! :flower: xxx

I'm really confused too as I contacted our local nursery which is attached to the primary school and they told me to come to their open day the December before he turns 4 - that would mean next December then as he'll be 3 in October 2012 but I'm still unclear as to when this means he would start as there would obviously be an enrolment process after the open day. Why can everywhere not just have the same rules, it would make it all a bit easier to understand.
