Looked it up and NhS website says

Your midwife or doctor should:
•use a tape measure to measure the size of your uterus
•measure your blood pressure and test your urine for protein
•offer more screening tests

What screening tests? Also what else happens at appointment, do I not have to do a birth plan anytime soon? And did anyone get to go see where they will give birth at any point?

You should be able to arrange a labour and delivery ward tour of the hospital you will be giving birth in. Your MW should be able to tell you how to get that sorted.

Also i'm not too sure about the other tests, but I just had my bloods taken and anti-d injection given today. My arm still hurts :( lol. Maybe they would offer them if needed and a check for gestational diabetes if that's a worry. Also they might ask you to think about some vaccines such as whooping cough and the flu jab.

I'm yet to see the mw for my 28 week apt though. Called today to book for this week and turns out she is booked up for the next two weeks  Will be due my next apt before I get this one :dohh:

My 28 appointment last week consisted of a sugar test (drink and then blood draw an hour later) they tested my blood count, sugar, and HIV.
In the appointment doctor listened to babies heartbeat, and measured my fundal height of my uterus.
You can go over birth plan at anytime with your doctor and ask questions, and hospital tours are usually set up through the hospital and not your doctor. Atleast that's how it is In the US.

I don't know what the other screening tests are. I had my bloods taken again at 28 weeks (I think) so perhaps it's this? I'm not sure if they do the glucose test in the UK, unless you have diabetes in the family. Could be wrong though I've never been tested in both pregnancies. As for the birth plan, I didn't get asked to complete this until my 36 week appointment and with the tour of the hospital, your midwife should be able to tell you about that. Mine run them once a month and you can just go along x

Haven't had bloods done since my 10 weeks. Weird and frustrating how places in the uk can be so different. Thanks tho.

At 28 weeks I had my Group B strep and gestational diabetes screenings. Don't know if it's the same over there!

I never developed an actual birth plan, just had some things I knew I didn't want done unless absolutely necessary, and made sure my husband knew them. (no episiotomy, no medical students, etc) Otherwise I wanted to just go with the flow as my labor progressed, which worked for me. We did end up seeing the L&D area at our hospital at 27 weeks, but that was due to reduced movements and I was briefly admitted for a check-up. Never went back for the formal tour; those few hours were enough! :haha:

I'm on blood pressure meds, and the doc said that this earns me an extra ultrasound. So maybe it just means additional testing if/as needed?

I had repeat bloods done at my 28 week appointment (UK). I also had the gtt done but not everyone has that. Oh and my anti-D for rh negative blood type.

I had my 28 week last week and it was the GTT test. They offered me this cus of my bmi. But your right different parts of the country do different things! You would also get an anti d injection if you are r-neg blood group. I also got my flu jab and whopping cough booked for next week.

So I think that's what the additional screening is - GTT

She felt my tummy, measured my uterus and listened to the heartbeat. I also gave a urine sample which she checked for proteins.

In my notes it says that the birth plan will be discussed at 36 weeks! Seems a little close to the big event for my liking!

I am high risk because I am diabetic (pre-existing before pregnancy), a 2 vessel cord, and head measuring slightly small (possible microcephaly) and also because I have a special needs child with a neurogenetic disorder. I do a lot of 24 hour urine samples for my doctors office to measure proteins, have to have NSTs done twice a week, growth scan every 4 weeks, amnio fluid scan every week, have had the harmony test done (came back low) because of my son, and still need a fetal echo done. This is excessive though, but would still probably be put under "additional screening".

Most of the time it would be iron, Syphilis, Rh factor, a culture to test for strep b and maybe a urinalysis to monitor for common infections like yeast, urinary tract, and bacterial vaginosis as these are common during pregnancy. Possibly they would use your family history and overall health to determine if you need a glucose tolerance test to test for gestational diabetes.

the 28 week one is just a blood test, in the uk you only have a GTT/GD test if yure high risk or have a history of it, im on my 3rd baby and have never had any kind of glucose test x

As others have said, UK seem to do bloods around 28 weeks, GTT if you need it (high BMI/history of diabetes/history of gestational diabetes/other risk factors - you'd know if you were having it) along with the normal wee test and measuring bp/tummy measurements. Other things will depend on your personal requirements.

Oh, almost forgot ... no idea about birth plan I'm afraid as was booked in for section last time, and our hospital offer an online virtual tour around the labour unit. Something about limiting infection potential I think. Have to say I was quite happy not being on show for tours just before and just after section!
