Lol so I started buying things for my hospital bag. I decided to start with maternity pads for some reason! OMG how huge are they!!! And advice on the pack was to stock up on about 4 weeks worth. 4 weeks!! I'm going to need them for 4 weeks!! I needed a lie down after reading that.... Lol.

They are huge............but it does help when your sore after stitches to have a bit of padding to sit on :haha:

I've only bought 3 packs, after the bleeding has slowed down after a few days I'll switch to Always Night towels, I only bled for 2-3 weeks

xx

The fatter the better !!!! Honestly if u get cut, forceps it's painful to sit down and normal pads don't add any support. I found asda little angels ones the best ( I tried all of them - boots, mothercare) - use mat pads for 10 days and then swap to thin ones !!!

Seriously, having just gone through labour I can't recommend enough that you get the biggest fattest pads you can. Just looking at one right now fills me with relief!

Oh really! This makes me feel a lot better!! Lol. I just didn't expect to bleed for that long! I'll make sure the next pack I buy is even bigger then lol

Oh and DH wondered why I couldn't use tampons!!! Erm.....

Where are you buying huge pads from? I bought a pack ages ago when I wasn't even pregnant but was having heavy periods and they were the same size as normal pads.

I had a hysteroscopy in April 2010 and the gynae ward had these enormous ones! I was hoping to get something like that for after the birth but I don't think they sell them in the shops, so where is the best place to get pads from?

do we need to buy a haemorroid cushion - would you recommend it....? - to those hwo have commented :) I have just started buying stuff as well and didn;t open the packet for that reason - didn;t want to scare myself. I already used to feel like I was wearing nappies when wearing night pads! :)

Owwwwww!

I agree with the others, you will want the big maternity ones! Then switch to normal pads (but for heavy flow / night time ones). I bled for 5 weeks - about 10 days quite heavily, and then just like the end of a period for the remainder of the time. The first few nights were the worst - I put an old towel over the bedding and it had to be washed most days! That plus leakage from the boobs....... for that I ended up wearing a bra with breast pads in bed for about 4 months until the leakage between feeds finally stopped! :flower:

The ones I got were from Boots. I haven't used pads for a long time so not sure what normal ones are like but from what i remember these seemed thicker and a lot longer than normal ones. Asda and wilkinsons have them too. They're in the baby sections. Xx

Most places sell them, Tesco, Boots, Sainsbury's, Asda etc

I never bought a haemorroid cushion. Just sat on a regular pillow if I needed it or you could get a kids rubber ring? :haha:

I've also seen some ice pack type things somewhere too, maybe Mothercare?

xx

Ok will see what situation I'm in afterwards - and then send hubby to get it :) hehe

I know! I was like sweetheart it will just fall back out LOL

Good idea re the towel. Gosh this reminds me of being a teenager before I dare use tampons and leaking at night. DH will love it. Ha ha.

I was looking at maternity pads in Tesco today. I got 2 packs of 10 of the Mum brand ones... I was going to get the REALLY thick ones, but they didn't have wings on and I don't like pads without wings. I'mnot sure how many packs I will need though... 2 packs should be enough for the hospital, might buy a few more packs (they're only £1.50 per pack of 10 haha), but will probably just use Always jumbo night time pads after the initial few days. I don't really know what to expect, but hopefully it won't be so heavy after the first week lol.

I just used regular ones wth my first birth and they were enough also I only bled for slightly over two weeks

Oh god they were my best friend after giving birth!!!

I used the ones from Tesco's and they were brill!! Then I switched to the boots slim ones after 2 weeks, I bled for 3 weeks and then had a week without bleeding and then my period 5 weeks PP.. Normal pads just weren't the same after the big cushiony maternity ones

Also a little tip!.. Buy extra nappy sacks to put you're used mat pads in.. No one told me this before labour but Lochia STINKS!!!

I don't think any of the really thick ones have wings, bit silly really imo

I'm using pads from Boots and Wilkinsons which both feel identical to what they gave me in hospital. I was also advised by a friend to buy some disposable changing mats (next to the nappies in shops) to sit/sleep on. They use these in hospital too and I am so glad I bought them as it just helps you to feel a bit more confident that you're not going to leak everywhere. There have been a good few times where I've stood up to feel a good amount leaking and these have seriously spared me and my furniture! It's horrible to think about I know, but I've found the way I feel physically quite surprising and wish I'd prepared for being quite uncomfortable and losing my dignity on a daily basis!
Speaking of which, anything you can stock up on for piles could feel like a real life saver. Witch-hazel is great for cooling. I really wish I'd bought a special cushion to sit on and am hoping to be able to get something in the next couple of days as it's really hurting and definitely not healing in the meantime.
So sorry if I've made this sound terrible. I just wouldn't wish so much discomfort on anyone and if it means you buy a few bits you never end up having to use then that's the best news ever!

I just said to DH about those mats! He had NO idea what I was talking about so I had to describe them as similar to puppy training mats :haha: which is basically what they are I guess! I think I will get some, I really don't like the idea of having to sleep carefully so I don't leak. I haven't leaked through a pad since I first started getting periods when I was 10 haha, but I don't fancy waking up in a puddle XD

It is a bit daft :/ To me... wings are a necessity to keep the pads in one place. I won't even wear non-winged pads for a very light flow because they just end up screwed up haha.
