Hi everyone,

I really need some honest opinions please.

As the title says I have a dilemma. DH and I are on our 2nd cycle of ttc #1. I am happy and settled in my current job but I had a call from another employer yesterday to say they were very interested in me and had heard good things about me and would I be interested in a chat on Thursday. The thing is, the new employer is potentially offering a better package which would allow me to save up to be able to take the full mat leave off with my baby if that happens. But I'd need to postpone ttc for a while, well 6 months.

I just don't know what to do as I want to start a family so badly, yet I know that by postponing ttc and getting a better paid job could be better for us financially for the future.

Also I am literally just approaching ovulation so we have been trying so far but don't know whether to stop just in case. But I would hate to miss out on a month of trying if the new job isn't right for me.

Help!

This is a tricky one. I am in a similar situation in that I am looking for a new job as the one I have, though secure and mostly fine, doesn't pay all that well.

Perhaps you could mention to your current employers that you have been approached and that the package is attractive - maybe you will be offered more at the place you already work if they want to keep you.

I hope you can sort something out! x

I think it's worth at least looking at the job and hearing what they have to say. An interview, or chat, is just as much for you as it is them - you get to see if it's the kind of place you want to work. You might get there and think, no it's not for me but at least you'll know. And if you meet them and you find it's a job you'd love to do and a company you'd fit in well with, then I'd say it may well be worth postponing TTC for a few months.

The thing is, you don't know how long it's going to take you to get pregnant, so I don't think you should put things on hold. Speaking from personal experience, there were some jobs I would've loved to applied for but as we were TTC I decided not to. Now here we are 3 years down the line and still no baby :( Shoulda woulda coulda!! 6 months isn't really all that long in the grand scheme of things, though I know it's hard to take a break when you want a baby.

Congrats on being head-hunted though, a compliment! x

Congrats on the interview offer. It's nice to be pursued, isn't it?!

As far as waiting, I vote to keep TTC. Do you really need to wait with the potential job or does the better package make waiting a sweeter deal? That is, would things be all that different compared to your current job if you were to get a BFP right away?

What does DH think?

Thank you all so much for your replies.

I feel almost greedy really, but it is all about money.

As much as I want a baby, I also want to be able to:

a) spend as much time off on maternity leave with the baby as possible which if I took this potential new job would mean I could do as I could save more with my higher salary
b) give the baby and my family as much support as possible and again its about a higher salary and better prospects to return to work and in the future.

My current job (in one of the UK banks) has a good maternity package and good support and I love my job and the people I work with, and I was looking forward to sharing my news with everyone at some point. Moneywise things are sometimes tight as DH is self employed and his work can be sporadic, but we feel settled and happy and ready for a baby. If it wasn't for this phone call yesterday we would be trying to get pregnant literally right now this week, we feel the time is just right.

The new job is in a rival bank, basically doing the same thing but for more money. I would need to work there at least 26 weeks to be entitled to maternity pay which is fine, but the type of job means I would need to postpone ttc for a few months as I need to have my head completely clear for the training and exams etc as its quite a full on job. I don't think I have the right mind set to carry on ttc and pass all my exams put it that way!

DH wants a baby as much as I do, but he also wants the best start for our family and I would like to be able to take some of the pressure off him by earning a bit more than I do.

I have a meeting with the manager tomorrow at 1pm, so I suppose that will give me my answers. But thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Decisions are difficult at the best of times but even harder when you have ttc emotions running round in your head too!!!

I'd be a bit concerned about starting a new job and planning to get pregnant potentially only 6 months after starting. I'd be worried that the job security might not be as strong at a new job as it is where you currently are. But I hear what you're saying about the better money, maternity leave and supporting your family. GL with whatever you choose to do!

Congrats on your offer!

Is there no way you could work just as a trial period there, to see whether you like it or not?? If I were you, I'd want to at least TRY the job to see how much I like it .. Otherwise you might always worry about missed opportunities, and what "could have been" ...

Good luck and I hope you make the right decision!!

I say keep TTC because you dont know how long it will take to get pregnant.
If you take the job and you have a delay in ttc then you are losing out on nothing. how long have you ttc?

Wow, I was in this exact same situation earlier this year.

DH and I started TTC for 2 months.
After the 2nd month, I had a job offer (internal), it was a big step in my career. DH and discussed, if I took we stop TTC until August.

The job meant more money, but also it was a rare opportunity that hardly comes up. I knew that if I don't take this now and try to make this same move after returning from mat leave its not going to happen. I will have different priorities - not as single-mindedly career driven.

So, I decided to take it and postpone TTC. I'm happy I did, bc I'm at a point in my career (with. This new job) where I'm happy to stay while I TTC#1 and take mat leave...and then perhaps TTC#2.

I don't feel driven for more career-wise.

Now, do I wish I was pregnant and having a baby right now? Of course I do...but that's just the nature of TTC. No cares for wanting a baby until that light is switched on...and you want a baby NOW.

Am I satisfied with where I am: yes, I'm happy that I'm ttc and happy with my job.

I recommedn what the other posters have said, feel out this job before you make this discussion.

I did that for about 2 wks, meeting/interviews, networking...before I decided it was right for me.

Goodluck!

Also, I feel like bc I was only TTC for 2 months it was different scenario then TTC for 6+ months and no BFP and thinking should we stop for another 6 months for a new job.

That helped with the decision. If I'd been TTC longer, I may not have taken the job.

Wow, thank you so much, you literally were in exactly the same position!

I agree with everything you've said, this opportunity probably won't come again for me and like you say, I've only tried for 2 months so I am in a better position to postpone as I haven't been on this rollercoaster very long.

God, I am really happy you replied, and I am so happy that it's worked out for you! It is very inspirational!

I have to meet the guy at 1.00pm this afternoon and I am nervous and excited but also going in with a very open mind. If the job isn't for me, I still haven't had a +opk this month so I haven't lost out either way! :winkwink:

Thank you again, and thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply x

Well they offered me the job within 20 mins of being there, basically the same job but £5k more. Obviously I need to talk to DH this evening but I think I'm going to take it and postpone ttc for a bit.

I think I'd be silly to turn it down really! :winkwink:

Congrats!! Hope everything works out for you. I'm back to ttc now, time flies!!!

...before you know it you'll have been at that job for some time and back to TTC.

Thank you so much x

I feel really quite sad about it today but I know in the grand scheme of things its the best thing to do.

Thanks again and good luck ttc!!!
