I was first prescribed Metformin April 2010 for three months. Then re-prescribed it in July 2010. I get that it needs to settle, but I keep having to lower my dose to 500mg and its clearly not doing a thing!

Ive put on more weight and only had two periods last year, why is it not working for me?:dohh:

hi im not sure mine is doing everything, but going to stick with it good luck with what ever you decide i go on and off it all the time this is my first whole month on it x

Maybe you need a higher dose? Have you tried taking more then 500mg? I take 1500mg and I find it works wonders. Do you know if you are insulin resistant? If you are not then maybe that is why it isn't working.

I also take 1500 mgs. I have been taking it since Sept. I just started working in December. I still have days where it upsets my stomach. Before it started working I felt the same as you...like I was taking it for no reason. Hang in there it does take some time and maybe you do need a higher does. Maybe you could look into the extended release caplets. I've heard they work well for the ladies who can't tolerate the regular version. Good Luck!!!! :Hugs:

I am also on metformin, 1750mg for me. The side effects have lessened quite a bit as my body has gotten used to it but show up now and then. My RE also said it helps to lessen the risk of miscarriage if it is taken through the first trimester. I don't like taking it but anything to get that sticky bean :)

I'm also on Met 1500mg and have been since May 09. The first couple of months it helped but then i went back to my mega long cycles. At which point they put me on clomid too which gave me regular cycles like clock work. I then finished the Clomid in Aug/Sept last year and i've had regular cycles since. It does work but you may need to up your dose and just stick with it! In the long run i think its helpful! Good luck!

It didn't work for me either. I took it for months with the dose gradually increasing from 500mg up to 2000mg and it just made me feel like shite. My GP thinks it was because I didn't actually have a problem with insulin resistance despite raging PCOS, bmi of 32 and never ovulating. But it did nothing so I came off it. Clomid is the way forward. I did 5 cycles, ovulated 4 of those and conceived twice (had an early mc before finally getting bfp) so there IS hope. x

Im going to stick at it and try to increase the most ive got up to 1000mg a day, im going try up my dose back to it and ask my FS if I should move to 1500mg,x

hi there
if you struggle with the side effects, definately ask for the slow release tablets. i have changed to them and am a bit more tolerant of these, i can now take 1500mg a day. i would also recommend taking them at night time with dinner, found this also helped. xx

I started met again beginning of January. I took the first couple of weeks slow and now I'm upto 1500/2000mg a day depending on SE's. If I eat fatty food I fell it the day after. I've had tender boobs last 10 days or so so fingers crossed its doing something.

hi there, i take 3 tabs a day. Started with 1 for a week, then 2 for another week then 3. I felt so ill in the second and third week but i persevered and it helped when i took each one with a meal. Goodluck!

I've had 2000 mg then 1500 mg of the XR version. The XR is a little better on my stomach but still horrible. After having my galbladder removed my stomach sets everything I eat to (TMI!) "puree" already so I quit taking it. I still O pretty normal though - cycles every 31-35 days usually. The RE still tells me to take it in combo with the femara and other stuff but I have to pick my battles!

Now my husband is diabetic and takes metformin in combination with other meds and his insulin. It's never upset his stomach ONCE! It's so frustrating to me. I could drink WATER and still have to run to the potty.

I took it for a while last year and found that it made me really ill unless i took it with a proper meal. My mum and step mum are both taking it for diabetes and dont have any problems so maybe you aren't insulin resistant? Lots of girls have done better with the slow release ones so maybe thats an option too?

Are you all taking it for PCOS or diabetes? I was told to come off it the other week as my specialist said new research says it doesn't do anything for PCOS!!

Im taking it for PCOS and its not doing anything, im still the same weight and periods are getting worse. I stopped it a month ago, but might give it one last try as Im suposed to take it untill July :/

I was having uncontrollable bleeding from Dec 09-Aug 10 and nothing they tried could get it under control until they put me back on Metformin and it regulated my periods right away. I am a firm believer in it.

Well I'm off the Met now but it did help me ovulate earlier. I get soo pissed off with my quacks as non of them really seem to have a clue about PCOS or Metformin.

But I can control my pcos with diet and exercise, which is hard work but worth it if I'm not taking tablets that might not even be doing anything for me.
