Should we use baby products?

Hi all,

Very quick and simple question (I think!)
Just wondering what you all thought about using baby products (like baby shampoo, nappy cream etc)

The midwives who did our antenatal class said we should just wash our little one with water, and I did tend to agree...
BUT.. there are some really good deals on organic, gentle baby products that have excellent reviews, and I am SO tempted to get some!

Do you think I should stick to the plan and not use anything but water, or splash out on some products?

(also - we want to use cloth nappies after a couple of weeks and I think I read that nappy creams shouldn't be used with them as they affect the absorbency.. can anyone confirm? We are going to use paper liners so does this also make a difference?)

we have products for my baby and used them on my DS but not in the hospital as u dont need to, and the first couple of baths was just water but it is defo personal preference hunnie xx

I've heard about talc affecting the absorbency of reusables but never cream...

I used baby products with my boy as they smell amazing, his first bath, as he was big n had loads of creases lol we used johnsons top to toe wash n it was great for gettin rid of excess blood n stuff! but it is up to u! Also with creams, not sure on the cloth nappy thing but surely using the linings it shud be ok? My son wud get terrible nappy rash when he was teething (around 5-7 months tho) so much so that pooing made his bleed, all around the cheeks, was awful so i used creams n talc to help soothe n dry out the area.

I didn't use any till 6+ months last time. Olive oil for dry skin, didn't need nappy cream, just water for bathing. No need to and I would've hated for my LO to have had a reaction. We also didn't use wipes for the first couple of months. We'll be doing the same this time!! X

Ooh thanks ladies.. It's so confusing isn't it!

Part of me keeps telling myself 'they don't need anything but water', and part of me keeps saying 'but these products smell amazing and what if they help our little girl's skin?'

I'm really struggling to keep a level head and not be swayed by all the baby-hype over what you do and don't need, but I keep falling off the wagon!

I've always used Johnsons. I used wipes from day one, even in the hospital, no one said anything to me.

For a bath I'd use a tenny bit of bath, and then wash and shampoo. Followed by lotion. I like the bedtime range, smells divine.

I only used nappy cream if baby was sore though, not all the time

xx

Babies smell amazing without any products on them :winkwink: xx

We're gonna try to do the same, although I do have a stash of Waterwipes to use which are just water and grapefruit extract. If we do use baby products we'll probably use Weleda baby, definitely won't be using anything with parabens or phthalates.

Never heard of waterwipes but they sound great - might get some for when we're out as cotton wool is quite time consuming! X

Nolan had horrible diaper rash as a newborn every time he pooped (which is a lot with newborns!) so Desitin diaper cream was a lifesaver. The shampoo is really up to you, I used it maybe once or twice a week for the first few months.

Yeah I totally agree. The products that are tempting me are the Miamoo range - they use non of the nasties and are meant to be very gentle.

My original plan was to use cotton wool with water for daytime spills and leaks during early months, moving to wipes for sticky fingers etc when she's a bit older. Was going to bathe in just water in the evening.

Darn it.. I can't decide!

We stocked up on great smelling stuff before abi was born and couldn't use any of it as she has sensitive skin, I even recently tried some completely gentle organic stuff on her still made her eczema worse do we just stick to oilatum from docs for when her skin is bad or just plain water.

I'm not sure either to me I'd feel that she wouldn't be clean if I just washed in her water but I do have OCD :haha:

I do plan on using wipes but I think it was pampers? that have brought out wipes that are just the same as cotton wool and water for newborn bums!

If it's organic it would be totally fine can you not buy like small tester bottles? Like you can with burts bees? that way if it doesnt suit you only spent £16 instead of £50!

The body shop also has an offer on at the min if you spend £50 you get £25 off and free shipping my typing in NEWYEAR and I hear their stuff is V good for baby's with sensitive skin :flow: x
