I came to this conclusion yesterday, let me explain. Over the past week or so, my LO has been spitting up more than usual; and the only thing that I can see that has changed, is the amount of poo in her diapers. She will now go several days with very little amount of poo (I know this can be normal) and then after about 3-5 days she will have a massive one... and what I noticed yesterday is after a massive poo, the spitting up is now temporarily non-existent, yet it seems like for the days she poos very little she spits up a lot.

I guess my question is why this happens? Maybe her bowels are pushing against her stomach and taking up extra room? Also, is there anything I can do to help her poo in larger quantities... seems like an odd request, I know, but I hate seeing LO in agony on the days she spits up often.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure why this happens but my youngest was very similar from a few days old he would skip days when pooing or only poo very small amounts accompanied by quite forceful spitting up. When he did poo properly it would be loads and loads. He also had tiny bits of blood and mucus in his stool, though this isn't always the case. When he had a hospital check up at about 2 weeks old the nurse and paediatrician were very concerned about how bloated his abdomen was too. We suspected dairy intolerance and when I cut out dairy from my diet-this being before I was vegan- it made an instant difference, after 2-3 days his stomach was soft and he was stooling regularly and without problems and the spit up completely stopped. May be something to try...xx

Thank you for your response, my LO gets the bloated belly look also. I contributed it to eating too fast and then being overly full, but it may be a dairy intolerance, who knows. What I do know, is if it continues, I will definitely start eliminating things from my diet and see if that works.

I have one more quick question... DD also seems more gassy than the average baby, I can literally feel the bubbles moving in her stomach. Do you know anything about gripe water, I have a friend who swears by it and think I might give it a try, any thoughts?

If you do cut out dairy it can take about 3 weeks to notice a difference. As dairy can take awhile to clear out of your system and then after that it needs to clear your LO's system. So if you don't notice an instant difference or within a few days, stick with it for about 3 weeks.

if you want a natural remedy for gripe water try fennel water

I have never used either one I just heard from an LLL meeting about this natural remedy.

Hi ladies. I'm no longer feed my lo but did untill 20 months, EBF till 6 months. During our time of EBF it was his norm to poo once every 8 to 11 days. When I say poo I really mean explode, in some very amusing places. It was always soft and healthy although by day 4 his wind could clear the room. I have always had a problem with dairy and so don't take it so it wasn't that. I was assured it was perfectly normal and as long as he wasn't in pain not to worry, so I didn't. Within a few weeks of starting solids he started going daily. My friends who were formula feeding were envious of how few nappies I went through.
