I've just got a letter from my practice nurse telling me she's made an appointment for my cervical cytology screening test (smear test) I've just rang the Dr's surgery to ask if I can still have this done while pregnant and she's said she doesn't know and will ask the Dr when she gets a chance, so in the mean time I was just wondering if anyone on here could answer my question.

Are you in the UK?

If so I didn't think they did them routinely while you were expecting but I may be wrong. I think I have read people in America having them while pregnant.

im due a smear but my mw has said il have it after the baby is born x not sure if its something they would do when your pregnant, i would imagine they wouldnt want to irritate your cervix but then again i havent a clue lol x

yep I'm in the UK, my Dr's surgery is hopeless though, the receptionist on the phone has just told me they've lost my notes, so would have no idea I'm pregnant! :dohh:

When I went for my scan she asked when my last smear was. Told her I was due one in April and she said we don't do them while you are pregnant xx

i herd its best not to have them done whilst pregnant too xx

I was due a smear when pregnant with my 1st and was advised to wait until after the birth. When I was due my smear last year I told the nurse I was TTC and there was a possibility I could be pregnant and she said not to worry as it was perfectly safe to do during pregnancy so I've been told different things. Personally I would wait until after the baby is born just in case...

I had that 2 days ago because the doc said we had to do it at least once during the pregnancy.. ahh i was so upset ive never had one before in my life and it was so uncomfortable especially since it was a male doctor that i dont really like!!

no we dont do smears while pregnantwill due after uve had the baby,i was due one till found out was pregnant.

In the US it is routine to have one in your first trimester. I wasn't even due for one and they did it again when I found out I was pregnant. It was very uncomfortable and I had cramping and spotting afterwards. I wouldn't get one again while pregnant. I dont see the point of causing all this discomfort when they can just postpone it anyway.

Thanks, so very helpful as usual, I'll ring my Dr's now and ask them to cancel it :D

i would say no hun they def dont do that in my surgery. the letter was probably routine xx

I got one done in my first tri and had no probs at all though I was told I may spot a little. You do have the option to tell them no or ask for more information before performing that on you. It is well within your right

Yup! I refused to have a smear test done when I was pregnant, but the way the midwives treated me afterwards (like I was stupid) was so annoying. I even signed their paper saying that I didn't want to have one performed, and they kept on trying to push it on me. Needless to say, I switched midwives! If you are in the US, it is considered 'routine' but you can always opt out of it!

Im surprised how many women find papsmears uncomfortable. I had no problems at all with mine. Although I've already had 2 kids so maybe I'm more streched :dohh:

Im also used to having someone looking downstairs, there were 6 or 7 people in the room each time I gave birth.

I was told they dont do it whilst pregnant or straight after birth because your results can come back abnormal due to cervical changes, causing worry for no reason.

As others have said, the guidelines are different in different countries. Here in Holland My doctor and midwife said to wait, as the results can be unreliable if you are pregnant so I would just have to have it done again later anyway. In other words exactly what ProudMum said!

I've had one in 1st tri and 2nd tri. 2nd was because of a random clot that came out.
But normally they do these just to make sure you don't have any std's to pass to your child at birth!

i was due my 6 month smear in Nov (after a colocoscopy) and never had it done my GP said i wouldnt get one till three month after i have baby, ive had 4 reminders since then!!! The thing is the reminders are generated and sent from the maternity hosp i will be giving birth at? i phoned my GP and they said hand the reminder back in and ive to write on it patient pregnant!!!! i said whats the point when you knowim already pregnant! doenst make sense lol x

Here in the US, it's very common to have them. I just had one (unfortunately!)

We do them here to check for abnormal cells, but also to check for Chlamydia and Ghonneria. If it comes back clean, then you can avoiid the eye drops required when the baby is born.
