Hi
Sounds a little silly but will i know when my little one is smiling?!
He is 4 weeks and 3 days old, he looks like he is smiling but is it just wind?? Sometimes its an hour or so after a feed, and he doesnt appear windy.
Will i definately recognise his first smile??
I sound so stupid!!
Thanks for any answers ladies.

U can sometimes tell by there eyes babe :) Molly's eyes light up when she smiles Molly was smiling at 4ish week xxx

I agree, it's in the eyes. They sort of crease at the edges. Also you might notice LO smile when they look at something (not necessarily something you would smile at- a light, a piece of fluff, a knot of wood in the coffee table...). First couple of days I wasn't sure if it was real smiles or not either! Your LO is definitely right age to start smiling, I bet he is!!! xx

My LO is also 4 weeks and 3 days and he is definately smiling! The health visitor dismissed me but me, oh, my mum and mil have all seen it and we can tell the difference between a smile and wind!

The wind smile loos like a smirky grin, the smile his eyes light up and he turns his head at the same time, he's reacting to me being daft and doing daft noises and touching his nose! It's so cute! :)

My LO had his first smile today... He was looking right at me and his eyes lit up and his smile was so precious :) He just looked happy, it totally melted my heart <3

His windy smiles are more gummy and his eyes tend to be closed when it happens or they roll back.

Definitely in the eyes! My LO started smiling at 4 weeks and you could tell it wasn't just wind x

I coukdnt tell at first! But both mine were smiling around 4 -5 weeks. You'll realise when they keep doing it that it was a smile after all :)

My 4th baby smiled at 12 days old :) My 5th was about 3 weeks and the older two were both 6 weeks.

So yes, I bet LO is smiling :flower:

I'm pretty sure I got my first happy smile as couple of days ago my little man had just woken up and was whinging but not crying so I picked him up and he gave me a big smile like he was happy to see me! It changed my mood completely as he'd been awake a couple of times that night and I was gettin a bit fed up! :)

Def the eyes; if it was just gas, her eyes were closed, glassy or unfocused. With an actual smile, they were focused and lit up :)

I was unsure at first if my LO was smiling or had gas. The first time I saw it was in the 3 week range, and looking back I'm sure it was a real smile. I agree, it's in the eyes.

I agree it's in the eyes. I wondered too, bc my LO was smiling at 3 weeks. She would smile every morning when I would put her in her ergo. She loved it. She still smiles when I get it out. You may be usure at first, but you'll know.

We had mini smiles and could tell when she liked something from around 3 weeks but the true smiles started at 5-6 weeks and they are amazing!!

I thought the 'smiles from wind' thing was debunked as a myth? Babies smile from birth as an instinct to keep the adults around them liking them. Those instinctive smiles then turn to social smiles eventually.

Thanks ladies!! I think i know what you mean about the eyes...
